Rheumy just called me & that was scary because it's a first. :-D He says
my blood tests were "boringly normal", and I can taper down the pred
dosage faster. If the nausea is still killing me, I can just quit the
stuff altogether.  YA-HOOO!

He also said the lumbar-sacral x-rays were "pretty OK", a little sign of
Arthur, but no big deal.

Then he asked me about hip and knee x-rays - did they take any?  I told
him no, they didn't. He wanted them done, and I double checked with the
Tech who wasn't taking them ;-). She insisted that he hadn't ordered
any, and that anything wrong with hips & knees would be caused by
whatever in the spine.

Umm... no.

Rheumy is sending me the scrip for hips & knees films, and I'll go get
zapped in a few days when that arrives. I'm *so* glad, because (a)
Rheumy noticed & 'cared', and (b) right knee is a hurting puppy.

I should have told him to *print neatly*. :-D

But mostly I'm SOOOO glad to be quit of pred sooner!  Talk about making
ya crazy! I'm tearing up from Happy at not having to do this so long! :-)

Thanks for your tips & encouragement, gang. I'm taking my ginger ale &
heading back to bed. Mega-condolences to those who have to take stuff to
feel crummy to feel better!

Hi Beth,,,,,   Please do not cut down on the prednisone too fast.   It can
cause a really good flare.
All in all,,, I like the way your RD thinks and acts.   Call at
home,,,, that's nice.   Good luck with the future X rays and may they give
you and your RD good information to take care of tomorrow.

Agreed. You'll need a taper, which can last a few weeks depending on
your current dosage. What is your current dosage, Beth?

Ari

I started on 25/day for 5 days - a rather low dose from what I'm
learning, but nearly killer for me. I made it through the 5/@25 days but
it was r-o-u-g-h. Did one day at 20, which was when RD called.

Was supposed to go down 5mg every 5 days, but RD said I can basically
skip the 20mg step.

Am taking 15 today & so far, so not-so-bad. ;-)

Thanks for the tip, Ari.

Can you break the tablets in half? That way you can go down in 2.5mg
intervals. You can even try dropping 2.5mg per day and see how the pain
goes if you're really anxious to get off the medication. Just remember,
you need to give your body time to increase its own corticosteroid
production again.

Really?  Hmm. Didn't think I "had" anything that flares! :-D Sure don't
want to find out differently. I'm backing down the dosage, just a little
quicker than we first planned.

Nice report Beth!
Hope the xrays show some indication for a easy solution in the knees and
hips.
