When I came home from the hospital on January 26 after having the
defibrallator implanted on Jan 23, I was expecting to feel likle a new
perons right away. Alas, didn't happen. I felt worse and worse. Called the
doctor's office on Feb 6 and told them I felt worse than when I went to the
hospital so they told me to come in the next day for xray & lab work and
then to see Dr. Chan. He decided to change the setting on my device. It
had been set for both top and bottom chambers to fire at the same time.
Since the bottom had not given any problems, he decided to set the top and
let the bottom go back to doing what it had done previously. It worked!
This time I did feel like a new person within a couple of days. I was
countimg the days until I could go to the pharmacy and the grocery store and
shop for myself again. I was so excited.
On Wednesday night the 14th, I broke my right ankle. I thought it was just
sprained and since it was about midnight, I didn't call the kids until
Thursday morning. We decided I needed to call the orthopedist who has
operated on me 3 times, and on my son, grandson, and granddaughter. The
girl took my file to him and he said come in at 5:30 and he would see me
after his last patient that day. It was 7:00 when Jayne and I left his
office with my right foot and leg in a cast. He said I would be immobile
for the next 6 weeks. He gave me a prescription for Lortabs and a
wheelchair. I also brought a walker home with me and used it for a couple
of days; the wheelchair would be too wide for my doors. Using my bad leg to
jump with and using both hands on the walker was killing me. Billy called
and said why didn't I try using my computer chair since it has five legs and
arms on each side. What a good idea.
Jayne had not gone to school on Friday but moved in with me Thursday night
and stayed through Saturday night. However.....
3 years ago, their son Cliff (19) had surgery on his right shoulder because
it kept dislocating while he was playing basketball. It was fine for 3
years. But about 3 weeks ago, it again dislocated while he was playing bb.
Billy was there and got him off the court and helped him get it back in
place.
This past weekend from Friday night through Sunday morning was Disciple Now
at all Montgomery Baptist churches. All the students ate at our church on
Saturday lunch. Since Cliff is now a "college man", he was helping with the
10th grade boys. Billy & Jayne were co-hosts at one of the homes, but Jayne
did her organizing and advising on the computer and stayed with me. Billy
was helping with the 11th grade boys.
About 5:30 Jayne got a call from the man where Cliff was that his shoulder
had dislocated when he picked up a foot ball to throw, and they could not
get it back in. Remembering my disloced hip, I knew what kind of pain he
was having. Billy was closer to him than Jayne was at my house, so he went
to get Cliff and Jayne left to meet them at the hospital where the surgery
had been done, and where the doctor on call said for them to go. He called
the ER and had them put Cliff on the list, but he didn't go himself to do
anything about it (the stinker!). They waited about 1 1/2 hours before he
was xrayed and the ER doc took him to put it back in place. He
put it back in place 3 times and it popped back out 3 times! They finally
got it to stay in and put his arm in a sling with a body belt around the
sling to keep his arm from moving. They finally got back to my house about
10:15. Cliff was also given a prescription for Lortabs, so he took one of
mine and they got one for this morning so they didn't have to get his filled
until today. The ER doc said get him back to Dr. Hartzog as soon as
possible because that shoulder was much too loose. We are just praying that
when Jayne calls in the morning, Dr. will see him right away and decide what
to do now. We're expecting it to be another surgery.
Thankfully, I had tried doing things on my own during the day and had gotten
pretty good at it, so I did fine while Jayne was gone.
They got Cliff home and settled and she came back to spend the night. She
only came by today to bring me some food and then took Cliff on home so he
could take a shower. Abbie is staying at their house until I am mobile
again.
Please pray for both of us. My poor left leg is about to give out pushing
the chair around, and Cliff is still in a lot of pain.

oh my gosh, gwen, when it rains it pours! i feel terrible for you that
you have the broken ankle on top of the heart situation. have a little
stress! and poor cliff. one of my (psycho)therapy clients years ago
was a teenager with a similar shoulder problem. she had so many
surgeries i lost track. finally had one that really worked (and she's
now a nurse), but she was perpetually in a cast or sling all the years
i new her. and always in pain. i hope cliff finds a solution to that
problem more easily than she did.
would renting a scooter help you get around the house more easily?

ladylove77 - 19 Feb 2007 14:35 GMT
Diane, I would have the problem of transferring from one place to another,
but if my pushing leg starts hurting any worse, I'll certainly consider a
scooter. I go back in two weeks for them to remove the cast to take xrays
again, and then re-cast.

Sorry to hear about Cliff.
I dislocated my left THR once and can assure all it is one of the most
painful feelings a person can have during a lifetime.
Hope your defib settings continue to help you feel better. Take care of
that ankle. Easier said tan done when you are just trying to get around
for normal needs. Used chair too when I had a fracture.

your family just has too much happening right now! sending prayers and

Hey! maybe you need to have someone string ropes around your house so you
can pull yourself around rather than always pushing with your leg. It sounds
kinda silly, but I'm kinda serious, too. Ropes on the main pathways, where
they can be off to one side, then you get around the room by pushing with
your leg. Might not really work, but it's a thought.

Hi Gwen
I'm feeling very sorry for you with all your woes. I hope everything
improves. About your grandson's dislocated shoulders. Has he seen an
orthopedic surgeon? My son had the same problem and they said that it was
caused by a genetically shallow shoulder socket. He had surgery on it.
They took a muscle from his back and wrapped it around the top of the joint
and it fixed the problem. I just wondered if this is an option.

Lorrie, it was an orthopedic surgeon who operated on his shoulder 3 years
