Hello,

Not a Newbie, off and on, for the past two months, excruciating pain on my
left hip, ( the two need to be replaced) went to my Rheumatologist Monday,
he gave me two shots of steroid, usually the shots relieve the pain, this
time, nothing, put me on Daypro, and Neurotin, no relief, what is Neurotin
to begin with, read about it, says its for seizures.
Can any of you tell me what works for you, the doc told me I had
inflammation of the bursa, but the pain goes always down to my leg.
Please give me some feedback.

Hiya!

If the shots aren't helping you really need to see the orthopedic
surgeon who will be replacing your hips and to get that process moving
forward.

Neurontin is Rx'd off label for nerve pain. For me it works excellently.
The Daypro is for inflammation (if you have bursitis, it's to settle that
down) and the Neurontin is for the nerve pain that radiates down your leg.
Anti-inflams and most opiates don't work for nerve pain...that's why the
seizure med.which works only on nerves.

Go see that surgeon, tho'...waiting to get the hip replaced is
guaranteed to do nothing for your pain.

Hugs from Rosie

You're welcome! I'd say break a leg but that would prolly be rude in
this instance. Best of luck on that consult and don't take no for an
answer...if ya need it replaced you need it replaced NOW.:-)

Hi Ladybug,

Sorry to hear about your hip pain.  I take Neurontin.  It is an anti-
convulsant that is used for pain and for nerve damage.  I take the
smallest dose at night and it does help some with my nerve pain.  I
can't take more than that because it can really make you sleepy, give
you a zoned out feeling, etc.  Please start off slow then build up if
you need too.  It has helped a lot of people but everyone can't take
it.

Thanks debbie, that's the feeling I don't like, zone out, spacy, just tell
me when you get up in the morning, I like to know if all those feelings are
gone?
I  have the 300mg capsules.

I'm coming in late, but seeing this tells me it's still good to add my hugs.
Any chance of dragging your husband along to the orthopod with you?  If you
can get him in with you to hear what the doctor says, maybe he'll believe in
your pain - though some still don't like to see it as they find it too
overwhelming themselves.  (so how do we live with it?)

Thanks for the much needed hugs from everybody.

I did drag him once, and he was really listening, I was telling myself
that's yet he will understand, yeah we got out of the office, and after few
minutes he told me, quote *That Doctor is a quack* no hope what so ever.

Hugs back.

I seem to remember that there was a suit (or a glove or something)
that you could get for people to wear so they could understand what it
is like to have arthritis.  Maybe your hubby could wear that around
for a couple of weeks & see how you feel every day.  Try Googling
arthritis suit - I think that's how I found it originally.

don't give up on him - it takes a bit to understand the pain - might have to
drag him off to counselling or with you to one of your doctor's
appointments.  It is tough to feel alone though.  Is there a good support
group around that is for support and not for whining?  It might not be for
pain but maybe a quilting group or knitting group (even if you just sit) or
a book club or maybe just a chair exercise group?  For me at first the
Arthritis Self Management Program was a lifesafer.  I went on to facilitate
classes for a couple of years and got as much support out of the classes I
facilitated as anything.  Of course we want you to stick around here too but
nothing takes the place of a friend for coffee - I know that.  In the
meantime - I will pour the cup if you tell me what you take in it.

Just as an aside when I was at my worst I used to time my trips to the end
of the driveway to get the mail when I saw someone was coming to get theirs.
It allowed me to interact with someone each day - even if it was just a
smile for them and a hello.  When I could I went for coffee on my own and
people watched.  The coffee shop staff knew me and soon so did all the
customers.  Even now I go for breakfast every day - it is my 1 hour of
energy and it fulfills my social needs (not my pocket book needs but can't
have everything.)

Take care and a gentle hug Ladybug,

Kelly

Thank you Kelly, your email is so sweet, I live in GA and  before I came to
the US, 32 years ago had heard of Southern hospitality, have not found it
yet, a group would be a good idea and I will look into it.
I take cream and sugar, thank you.
I love to read, that's what really helps me, I have few friends who still
have a job, how lucky, I used to be a Nurse's aide and love it, taking care
of people  and listening to them, those were the Days.
Gentle hugs.

Ladybug, where in GA do you live?  I'm a born & bred GA peach, wrinkled but
still sweet.  I'm sorry you haven't found that southern hospitality.
We moved from GA when I was 17 and I married soon afterward, but I lived in
Savannah for a number of years; now live in Montgomery, AL.  Nice to see you
here.

Gwen,

I lived in Augusta for the past 20 years, also in Columbia, SC, and Texas, ,
I love Savannah and used to go very often, never been to Alabama, my husband
is from Tennessee, so we go there for the holidays.
Since Augusta is a military town, people come and go all the time, and with
everything happens all over the place, people are more cautious, and I can
understand that, where is the time where people could leave their door
unlocked at night.
Thank you for the sweet email.

Then that is what you could do if you loved it.  Visit a home nearby, drink
a cup of coffee and listen.  They will listen back and that means
everything.  My sister would love to have you near her assisted living home
(but she lives in Vancouver, BC, Canada.  Bet you would find some sweeties
who just need a friend (I know not the same! but close.)

In the meantime the coffee is poured with cream and sugar and a Nice cookie
on the side.  Ah books - what kind do you like?  We always have and look for
referrals.  I am reading Kathy Reichs right now having just finished
Catherine Coulter's latest FBI thriller (love her books).  Of course I have
also read all of the Diane Chamberlain books and most of the MIRA books out
there in paperback (Diane is one of our resident authors!).  and yes I
quietly read Harlequin romances where my pain is high - don't need to
concentrate and they always turn out that the good guy wins.

Welcome,
Kelly

Kelly,

About books, I like so many, the last one was Flag or our Fathers,I had see
the movie, so good, and had to learn more about the history, I like Grisham,
Patterson, Denis Lehane, he wrote the book that make a very good movie I
think, Mystic River, also true events books, Marley and me was so good,
anyway if you do need some let me know, they are gathering dust, my husband
hates to read, his thing is TV, wrestling, NASCAR, and Football meaning his
team only.
Books take you away for a while and make you almost forget about the pain.

Ladybug hugs.

Hi Ladybug.  Know what you mean.  Most of the "strokes" I get are from this
newsgroup and AMF.  I guess you gotta be "one" to understand one.  Gentle
hugs, Nanny
