Oh boy do I have a doozy here. Everyone is coming down with the flu here at
our house. My question is.. should I skip my weekly dose of Enbrel due to
everyone getting sick?. I am starting to ache and have a cough. My youngest
has a 103.5 temp and I am trying to get it down by alternating tylenol and
ibuprophen. My 15 year old is running a 100.6 and is coughing and achey. 17
year old has no problems because he has had the flu shot..hes asthmatic. I
went to get mine and was told they were out.. now I might be getting this
junk. My chest is getting really heavy and feels congested and I have been
feeling really tired too. I am not sure how to get ahold of my RD after
hours so I am kind of stuck. Any help or advice is welcome..:o)

Hi Rhonda, I can only tell you what I would do. I would put off the shot
until I could talk to my RD. It reads as though you are coming down with
everyone else is having. Do not get overly tired and drink plenty of
fluids.
A little fever is your body fighting this off and a good thing. If the
fever increases it is time for some aspirin and hit the bed.

I should have read your post first Harv. I ended up repeating your advice.
Regarding aspirin, maybe tylenol would be a better choice? Aspirin is an
antiinflamatory and inflamation can be very useful during times of
infection. On the other hand, if she's postponing a dose of Enbrel
perhaps a little stop-gap anti-inflamatory would be best? You've got
more personal experience with these meds than I do.

Ari

Oooh, I do not know about that but doing nothing until it has you is a
serious mistake when a person takes a dmard or anti-tnf. There was not a
thing I could do that would of made these two rounds of bronchitis but let
the medicine to its work, stop all the medicines I take and hope for the
best. The best almost put me in the hospital and I am not out of the woods
yet. If I were to die today, they would not say it was because I had RA or
the medicines I take. By the way, a flu shot gives me a serious bout with
the flu and both my doctors agree that I can take a shot if I want it but
they are not taking responsibility for it. Makes a person think, huh.

So your reaction to the flu jab is an immune response and not an
allergic type reaction? That's a tough one: take the chance of having a
worse reaction to the flu itself, or go with the definite sickness that
comes from the flu jab.

I agree with Harv whole-heartedly. Hold off and get a call in to your RD.
In the future - call ahead to your doctors' offices and have someone hold a
flu shot for you. Being on enbrel puts you in the high risk category. In
fact, I make sure Mike gets his shot too - I don't even want flu in our house
if we can avoid it!

Enbrel will make it harder for your body to resist the secondary
infections from bacteria. The flu will tear up your respiratory
epithelium as one part of the infection.

For future reference, get the flu vaccination early, not when people
around you start getting sick. If one place has run out, go to another.
Flu kills people who are young and healthy with good immune systems. You
are on immunosuppressive medications, so it is very important to get the
flu vax each year and make sure you get it done. You know this, I'm
saying it for other people reading this who may not consider it to be
'necessary'.

When are you due for your next dose? if you're due today, if I were in
your shoes, I'd put it off until I could speak with a doctor. So many
people here are asking this same question, and it surprises me that
doctors don't tell patients what to do in these very common scenarios
after placing their patients on immunosuppressive medication.

I had an appointment for the shot back in November but they were out then..
I kept calling and they were still out. I tried the health department but
they told me if I had health insurance I couldn't get a appointment there..
I should have gone up to the drug store when they had their clinic and had
it there.. oh well I will know next year and I will go early.. see I made
sure my oldest had it because of his asthma..but I wasn't persistent enough
for myself.

We get ours at a pharmacy and inject each other :-)

Mike and I were just talking about this...I haven't had one in a few
years....Last year they were having such a shortage and I am not at
risk...But Mike is Asthmatic also...and it is important...but somehow...this
year...he has just not done it...Maybe he could go by his doctors this am
and get a "Jab"...In Oklahoma we are up to the epidemic stages...They said
it isn't as bad as it could be since we had all that really bad weather that
had the schools shut down for a week and people were just staying
indoors...But this last week with the break in the weather...I know we got
out and went to the Golf Expo one day and the Boat Show the next...Can you
say ...Cabin Fever....
Well...Rhonda...Saying a prayer for you and your family...
Hugs Cindy
