Dear Friends,
My 19 yo son requested prayer today about a medical condition that he
has. He is a sophmore in college about 350 miles from home. He has
been ill since July but it has been getting worse. While home for
Christmas, he did a full round of tests with various doctors. But the
ENT found major sinus blockage and put him on antibotics. (This was
via CAT scan.)
You don't think sinus is a real problem but he can't eat. The drainage
gets so bad that he can't swallow. (No problem with throat. They did
an upper GI with barium.) He lost 7 pounds between Thanksgiving and
Christmas and 10 since Christmas. So this is becoming critical.
The antibiotics have gone one cycle and no improvement. The ENT said
that surgery was a possibility. And I think that my son is more than
ready!
Thanks in advance for prayers!

I can relate, Vickie, I have had similar problems since September, three
antibiotics and no relief. Have only lost five pounds but can't afford more. I
see an ENT Tuesday. Tell your son I am pulling for him, I know how gross it can
be to try to eat. Send him cyberhugs from me.

When I had sinus problems like yours a few years ago the ENT didn't do
much for me. But when I went to the infectious disease doctor he
cultured the infection and put me on IV antibiotics. Six weeks latter I
was healed. He also ran some blood tests on me and found out I had low
IGG. Been better ever since. Hope this helps. Diane W.

Diane, how low was your IGG? I'm just curious - found out at my rd appt.
last week that my IGG and IGA are both "moderately low" (igg at 400, IIRC).
I've gotten good at avoiding infections after years of practice, but have had
oodles of viruses. (fortunately, i've not had the kind of wound infections
you've been enduring!) I've been trying to decide if I should push my docs to
explore this further. I'm tired of the viruses and of feeling lousy in
general, but don't know if this is worth taking further.

UPDATE!!!!
Tymon is coming home tomorrow with an appointment on Friday! The
doctor has agreed to do all that he can on that day since Tymon has to
miss school and come in from out of town!
Thanks for advice!

prayers for your son, vickie. I know all too well how miserable sinuses can
make you.
surgery may well be the best thing for him. i know several people who have
had to have infected sinuses opened surgically and all have been delighted
they did it and have felt MUCH better afterwards. (one was told by the
surgeon, "there were things growing in there i've never seen before and never
want to see again!) they can do the surgery endoscopically nowadays so it is
much easier on the patient than it used to be (such as when my grandfather
had sinus surgery around 1920!). best of luck to him.
