Glucosamine and Chondroitin for Arthritis Pain by Jeffrey Dach M.D.

For an example of yet another distortion in the mass media regarding
issues of health, drugs and medical care, look at the reports of  the
NIH GAIT study which examined nutritional supplements for arthritis
pain. As usual, the media got the story wrong.  Rather than being
ineffective, as the media concluded about glucosamine and chondroitin
for knee pain, the NIH GAIT study actually showed the opposite.  What
the study really showed is that in patients with moderate-to-severe
knee-pain, the combination of the two supplements (glucosamine and
chondroitin) was more effective than both Celebrex and a placebo. The
glucosamine-chondroitin combination significantly reduced pain in 79
percent of those who received it.  Celebrex significantly reduced pain
in 69 percent of the recipients and the placebo in 54 percent.

The real conclusion is that regarding patients with moderate to severe
knee pain, the less costly glucosamine and chondroitin combination is
more effective than Celebrex.  The media stories also fail to mention
the fact that Glucosamine and Chondroitin have no adverse side effects
while Celebrex causes gastric bleeding, ulceration and death. This is
an important distinction.  Celebrex is a NSAID pain pill.  It has been
estimated conservatively that 16,500 NSAID-related deaths occur among
patients with rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis every year in the
United States.

There are many more examples of these blatant distortions and untruths
which can be found in the book, "Overdosed America, the Broken
Promise of American Medicine", by John Abramson, M.D. who teaches at
Harvard Medical School.  drdask drdoch drdach jeff dach

And another book you should read is "The Truth About the Drug
Companies: How They Deceive Us and What to Do About It", by Marcia
Angell MD, former editor of the New England Journal of Medicine.  In
the meantime, you are invited to review more information about this
topic on my web site at http://www.drdach.com/

Excellent post, keyboard. My own findings are as good. I took Motrin in
large doses (up to 900 mg) for pain and swelling of arthritis, and
unfortunately, took one pill at bedtime (which helped me wake up less
painfully); only to find that it ate a hole in my stomach lining (preventing
me from sleeping on my favorite side). When I began taking
glucosamine/chondroitin/and sometime MSM in a big combo pill, the hole was
mysteriously healed - I could tell because the gurgling stopped when I fell
asleep on my 'favorite side'. I think it's good stuff.

The other people posting about glucosimine are not advertising their office.

Advertising is not allowed on alt.support.arthritis.

You don't are about helping anyone, just about how money much you can make from
their problems.

They regularly take glucosamine that they purchased at Costco,
RIteAid, CVS, SavOn, etc.

They aren't trying to peddle some crap like certain shysters who
pop in and out of ASA with their philter like the medicine men of
the wild west.

Glad you were looking in a mirror when you wrote that.

I am the very model of a Newsgroup personality.
I intersperse obscenity with tedious banality.
Addresses I have plenty of, both genuine and ghosted too,
On all the countless newsgroups that my drivel is cross-posted to.
Your bandwidth I will fritter with my whining and my snivelling,
And you're the one who pays the bill, downloading all my drivelling.
My enemies are numerous, and no-one would be blaming you
For cracking my head open after I've been rudely flaming you.

I hate to lose an argument (by now I should be used to it).
I wouldn't know a valid point if I was introduced to it.
My learning is extensive but consists of mindless trivia,
Designed to fan my ego, which is larger than Bolivia.
The comments that I vomit forth, disguised as jest and drollery,
Are really just an exercise in unremitting trollery.
I say I'm frank and forthright, but that's merely lies and vanity,
The gibberings of one who's at the limits of his sanity.

If only I could get a life, as many people tell me to;
If only Mom could find a circus freak-show she could sell me to;
If I go off to Zanzibar to paint the local scenery;
If I lose all my fingers in a mishap with machinery;
If I survive to twenty, which is somewhat problematical;
If what I post was more mature, or slightly more grammatical;
If I could learn to spell a bit, and maybe even punctuate;
Would I still be the loathsome and objectionable punk you hate?

But while I have this tiresome urge to prance around and show my face,
It simply isn't safe for normal people here in cyberspace.
To stick me in Old Sparky and turn on the electricity
Would be a fitting punishment for my egocentricity.
I always have the last word; so, with uttermost finality,
That's all from me, the model of a Newsgroup personality.

well,  david [at least i think that's who wrote this post]

as much as i dislike spammers, and have even more dislike for those who
use basic science to promote their unproven and far from the mainstream
theories based upon those small facts,

your claim that he isn't an md is  just plain incorrect.

true - he's off in the way beyond with his 'anti aging' stuff, and is
doing so to rake in the bucks, but before he went this route, he was on
staff of memorial hospital in fla for almost twenty five years...

as a radiologist mind you, not a researcher or chemical/biological
specialist

but he is board certified, now in anti aging medicine...

still a spammer though...
