In the fall I had a double dose of clavulin/amoxicillin for a sinus
infection. In November, it reoccured. Then in December, I had another
one. I have been off the abx for two weeks, and now I have another
infection. Grrr.
Does anyone know if probiotic capsules prevent yeast overgrowth?

I take an huge amount of probiotics and yes, it does.  All probiotics
are not created equal-potency, kind or organisms, etc can make a huge
difference in outcome.  Send me your brand and I'll see if I can steer
you to a good dosage.  Also time to cinsider a netti pot-

if you can't find a netti pot and want one Rose let me know and I will pick
one up in Seattle when I am down.  They didn't seem to know what I was
talking about here.  I have used a small nose syringe gently before.  I am
hoping the orencia doesn't give me the constant infections the way the
enbrel did.  I have only had one sinus infection since coming off enbrel
which was a pretty minor one all things considered.

When are you going again, Kelly?

I can probably get one on eBay since they do not seem to be available
here. I have trouble with the little rubber syringe thingy, so maybe a
netti pot would work better.
Thanks!!

Not quite sure Rose but probably within the month.  The next 2 weeks are out
for sure but Arlene (my friend) and I are getting antsy to go somewhere for
a couple of days so might go for 2 days to Seattle at some point in time.

Will let you know before - might even see if my sister or mom are headed
that way.  Susie will get me anything and bring it up but haven't heard
whether she is up in the next 2 weeks or so.

Anyhow after all that should be able to get something within the next 3
weeks if all goes well.  I just couldn't find one here last time I went
looking.

More snow overnight.  this is getting old fast!!!!!  one more snowfall
forecasted on thursday.  Pat drives some investors from Chicago up to
Kamloops this morning.  Hope the Coquihalla is okay.  He comes back Friday
afternoon.

Take care of yourself - wish you were having a better year and there was
some way to get a decent pair of boots for you.  Seems to be the year we all
need them.

btw, I use a "rhino horn" - same concept as the neti pot, but a slightly
different shape that fits against the nostril more tightly.  I foget who I
ordered it through, but I emailed them and asked about the differences.  the
woman who answered had used both herself and preferred the horn, so I went
with it.

It's good to know your docs are on top of things enough to have checked you
out for any blockage.

Hi Kelly,
I found a neti pot on eBay and it was from a Canadian source even, so
I will not have to pay duty. I just went ahead and ordered it.
Thanks for your offer though.
I appreciate it!

Great - will have to check that out if the orencia gives me problems.  Off
for my next infusion - fingers crossed.

Pat drove to Kamloops yesterday - said the roads weren't as bad as he was
expecting.  I am having a lovely week by myself (well with my mom staying
with me, and at times my daughter in law staying with me.

Take care,
Kelly

I just wondered if you received my email, M, since I have not heard
from you.

Thanks!

1. I guess that depends on where you take them :)

2. People on immunosuppressants are often discouraged from taking the
capsules, as the doses of bacteria (even normal healthy ones) are quite
high and can cause problems in those who are immunosuppressed.

Ari

The lactobacilli drinks from fermented milk are generally okay, as they
have lower concentrations overall of bacteria than the pills do. They're
not as effective in healthy non-immunosuppressed people, but that's not
a status many here enjoy. The medications used to treat RA are more
likely to cause complications with taking the capsules than the combined
medications that I'm on. On the other hand, I am constantly on
anti-fungal medications because with my present immunosuppressant
cocktail I tend to be very susceptible to fungal infections.

have they XRayed and/or CT scanned your sinuses?  I'm wondering if there's
some blockage that's keeping the infection from clearing completely.  I had a
friend who had a sinus infection for two solid years before I finally got him
to override his allergist and see a good ENT who discovered a total blockage
that kept it all from draining.

Yes, I have had a CT, and there was no blockage.
Thanks for asking.
