What total nonsense! If the designer were so good at perfecting nature,
there would be no point in having this newsgroup. It would be entirely
superfluous.

Maybe people corrupted the things that the "Watchmaker" created.

Who created a device in which an air pipe crosses a fuel pipe?

When God made the world, it was perfect.  It was human beings who messed
things up.

This in neither a political news group nor a religious news group.

This is an arthritis support newsgroup.

Offering good wishes to people of one faith or another on the occasion of one
of their holidays, or prayers and/or caring thoughts to those who are having
problems is supportive.

Posting in support of one religious belief over another is divisive and mean-
spirited does not belong in a support group.

I agree 100%.  Some days there are more OTP postings than those
pertaining to arthritis.  I, for one, do not need FireChief or
CalifChief or whatever pseudonym is being used, to give me a "Reader's
Digest" version of all of the news of the previous days.  Nor do I care
to know about someone's plans to move or to hear about their cutesy
pets.  This group has certainly degenerated (no pun intended) from the
days when Dr.Doc was an active contributor!

Ron,

That message was fairly harsh - unneccessarily so, I think.  Our whole
lives don't revolve around our arthritis (or at least they shouldn't).
So what if we post about things on the site that don't have to do
directly with our arthritis?  This is supposed to be a _support_ group
- how can we feel supported if we are all strangers?  The OTP posts
allow us to get to know each other & to feel connected, which is a huge
part of the support this group offers.  If you don't want to read an
OTP post, don't.  You have a choice.

and i agree with all 3 of you.

OTP - means (off-topic) the post is not about arthritis and may pertain to
anything else the poster cares to post--ouuu, that means religion, politics,
philosophy, professional sports rivalries, dogs, cats, kids, sewing, golf,
dancing, jokes, weather, chocolate, delights, frights, ufos or whatever
else -- that you are NOT trying make a profit off us with or that you are
not trying to compulsively/obsessively convince us is sane when it is not.

it is as simple as this -- if you don't want to read anything that doesn't
pertain to arthritis, then delete all the OTP posts or set your message
blocker/block sender to automatically delete them.  nobody here says, "you
HAVE TO read them".   if you are too lazy to do that and want "strictly"
medical information, then i suggest you find a blog or a website that posts
or deals with nothing else but that.

You just agreed with Norman that derisive post do not belong
in the group, then you turn around and commit the same felony.

When did you drop in from the skies?  Perhaps when you
become a regular contributor your ranting and raving will
be considered "support" in ASA.

Apparently you spent less time reading my post than formulating your
attack on me. I suggest that you not take remarks out of context.  I
stand by my statement that much of what is posted is NOT related to the
supposed raison d'etre of this newsgroup, i.e. arthritis support.  Don't
say I was ranting & raving when I was merely stating a fact.  Perhaps
the truth hurts!

While I tend to agree, find prayer useless and possibly counter-productive,
etc, it is possible that all these OTP items help arthritic posters cope
with their afflictions.

Some very religious people believe that asking for divine intervention is
improper. Some do not.

The act of praying, however, does help some people focus their thoughts and
achieve a measure of calmness and/or an inner strength to be able to cope with
hard times.

My personal belief (no requirement for anyone else to agree) is that no mortal
being or group of beings can comprehend more than a very small fraction of an
entity who could create a universe; so all religions have an equal chance of
being partially correct, much like the story of the three blind men and the
elephant.

Therefore, I try to respect all religions which do not demand that its
followers belittle other beliefs.
