I just started reading this group, and would like to know if anyone has
gotten any relief from joint pain by using that cream that's made from
hot chili peppers.  (capsaysin?)  I also posted this to the
misc.health.arthritis group.  Thank you.

Al,

I don't know if this works on the same principle as a "method" used by
the Chinese (I am Chinese, but I prefer to take little white pills
prescribed by the doctor to relieve my pain). My mother used it, as did
my grandmother.  I saw them apply this method when I was a child, long
ago.

The thing that I remember is they never did the procedure themselves,
they had a "professional" do it for them.  This is how I saw it done --
the "professional" would use the Chinese tea cups (without handles,
which you get in Chinese restaurants) and using rice wine (I think) as a
lubricant, the woman would rhythmically scrape my mother/grandmother's
back and behind her neck with the rim of the tea cup till the skin is
raw.  I'm not sure if particular attention to special pressure points in
the back or not, but both my grandmother and mother swore by this method
to relieve them of pain.

Chilli hot peppers would really burn.  So perhaps it works on the same
principle, some other pain to distract from the unbearable pain the
person is feeling?

Just my two cents.  :-)

Good luck,

Rub with a cup until the skin is raw?  I don't think so, Al.  But then, I'm
not Chinese.  Nanny

Sanchona,
read my response to al about chilis. I am always a little concerned
when someone tells me they are taking a "chinese standard" as in
(little white pill). I took a standard for 8 years (little black pill)
as it relieved my RA significantly when nothing else helped. When my
supplier got busted by the feds I had one analyzed and it contained 5
mg. of prednisone. The recommended dose was 6 a day. I only took 2 or
3, thank god. Those years of pred are now a major contribution to a
variety of serious health problems that begin with "steroid-induced"
including advanced osteoporosis. Im 55 and I got the bones of a 95 year
old.
Please be careful with the standards. If they do not require a script
find out what the active ingredients are. If they work I would like to
know.
I still use 'traditional chinese medicine' as part of my protocol but
it does not include any pre-packaged medicines.

Hi Johnie,

Sorry if you misunderstood me.  I am not advocating scraping anybody's
back till they are raw -- I'm just putting forth a comparison -- of what
my mother and grandmother had done for pain relief in the fifties, when
I was a child.  I would never go their way -- I prefer little pills (I
cut my big pills to small fractions before I can swallow them)
prescribed by the regular doctor!

I just figured it had to be the pain from the scraping that covers their
other pain and so they find relief of some sort.  But then what do I
know?  I can't figure out how acupuncture works but it seems like some
people go take a two-month course and set up business for themselves!

Well, I can "excuse" my grandmother and mother for seeking Chinese
traditional medicine, when "western" medicine "failed" them, but my
friend who is in her forties, swear by Chinese traditional medicine.
She boils her herbs with dead cockcroahes/snakes etc and drinks her
"herbal tea" to cure her "ills".  She consults her "herbal doctor" to
get her prescriptions, and she swears by them.  Her whole family does.
Her grandfather was a famous herbal doctor in China.

When I had a bad attack of sciatica some years ago, she got me a
prescription -- I was in such desperate straits, I was ready to try
anything.  I saw pieces of dead snake in the prescription and forced
myself to ignore that.  But the black potion of "herbal tea" she boiled
for me was hard to drink.  After two doses, I refused to swallow any
more.  The sciatica eventually went away -- I don't know if it is just
the natural course of events, the medicine or the "herbal tea" -- but I
won't ever take that "herbal tea" again!

But that's me.  My friend still swears by it, supplements "western
medicine" with it.  In fact she is planning to write a cook book -- she
is a great cook -- which would have recipes that would include herbs
that would improve a person's health.  I will be co-authoring (I cook
great curries), and I shall make sure the recipes only have herbs.  I'm
fine with dried plants, roots, seeds etc. but no dead insects/reptiles
or whatever!  LOL

Best,

no, no i didn't misunderstand that part. What i misunderstood was where
you are getting your little white pills. The phrase "little white
pills" sounds like a Chinese standardized medicine as were the "little
black pills" that I took for years that were laced with prednisone. I
am still curious what you are taking for your arthritis pain and if it
is working.

I don't do snake heads>g< but I do use a variety of chinese herbs which
have helped modulate my immune system for over 20 years. Hey happy
holidays and congrats on the book. Read the chapter. sounds great.

For me, any pill is a little white pill -- If it is big I cut it into
two or sometimes into four pieces.  Pills just get stuck in my throat.
They sometimes pop up again despite the full glass I drink to wash them
down!

The phrase "little white

I don't take Chinese medicine of any kind.  I have enough of the
"Western" kind!  I swear by "Western" medicine because I usually get
relief from them.  :-)

I'm sorry if I've misled you.  How I came to join this group was when I
had a trigger finger on my right hand.  I was alarmed because that
finger (the middle finger on my right hand) behaved in such an
extraordinary manner, and I had no control over it.  I asked my friends
and they said that was arthritis.  So I searched out the newsgroups for
support and found alt.support.arthritis.  It was only after I consulted
a doctor that I found that trigger finger is not arthritis.  By this
time, I had begun to learn a lot about arthritis from ASA, and I enjoyed
the friendly atmosphere here.  I mostly lurked, for I felt a bit of a
fraud. Then one day I had a problem with my novel -- a card game scene,
which made me approach Larry Rassmussen - I had read one of his posts
where he said he ran a card game competition - for help.  He was very
supportive, and he became a friend.  After he died, I sort of drifted
away, though I popped in now and again to "keep in touch" by lurking
some more. :-)

When I needed an "audience" to share my excitement, I returned to this
newsgroup again.

No, I do not have arthritis, unless you count osteoarthritis as
arthritis?  I'm taking glucosamine and this has controlled the pain I
have in my right knee.  Three large capsules per day for 4 our months. I
have since reduced it to 1 capsule a day. :-)

I don't recommend it.  LOL

I'm glad the herbs are helping.  When my friend and I finally get down
to writing our Herbal Cookbook, I'll be sure to let you know -- give you
a peek at it, anyway.  :-)

Thank you.  I wish you a good holiday season, and a pain-free 2007!!

Sounds like arthritis to me. osteo......arthritis.......yup! It's arthritis
alright. I can also mention it can be a very dibilitating form for many.
There are all levels of severity. I am very happy you have controlled your
pain effectively without much intervention. I hope it stays that way for you
forever.  I know you were not denigrating osteoarthritis suffers as being
something less than worthy so we don't need to go there. I am very happy you
have found us again and will continue to stop by and share your experiences.

Sanchona, as Gary said, osteoarthritis is indeed arthritis.  And it can be
very painful and debilitating.  I have had a hip replaced and a thumb joint
replaced because of osteoarthritis.  Have degenertive disc disease, and pain
just about all over my body due to osteoarthritis.  I'm glad glucosamine has
controlled your knee pain, and I hope yours will never get any worse.

Oh dear.  I should have taken osteroarthritis more seriously.  When I
complained of pain in my knee, of the difficulty I had in getting up
after squatting to the floor, my family doctor didn't think it was
anything serious.  He showed me how to get off the floor that would be
less painful for me.  I wanted some pills.  He then said I could take
glucosamine -- that I didn't need a prescription for that -- and told me
to take 3 capsules a day.  I saw him again in 3 months time (to manage
my blood glucose level) the pain had lessen and after 6 months, the pain
had gone away.  He told me to reduce the dosage to one capsule a day.
He didn't give me any indication that the pain was anything to worry
about.

Thanks Gwen, for the warning.  :-)

Ah, I have arthritis.  Thanks, Gary for this post.  I do qualify to be a
member of this group then!  I guess Arthur has always been waiting to
pounce on every one of us as we age.  Like death and taxes, most of us
are not going to escape it.  :-(  We can only hope for medical
technology to provide us with complete relief from pain, sooner than
later.

I've been wondering if there are any studies done on athletes/sports
people and dancers -- whether they suffer more or less than we
"ordinary" people do as we age, whether all the hard work they put their
muscles through, over the years, have helped or hurt them where Arthur
is concerned?

Anybody know?

Al, plop Capsaicin into your search engine and you will find some
interesting research. Most recent studies have found it to be
beneficial for mild to moderate pain. The most intriquing research is
its interaction with 'substance P'. By controlling 'substance P' we
might get a handle on neuropathic pain and maybe even Fibromyalgia.
Research..research...research is the key.
