About a month ago when we had our first big snowfall, I was trying to
push snow off my driveway and felt something snap. I had cracked a
lower rib. Since then it has been pretty painful, but tolerable in
comparison to some of the joint  paun we experience in the day-to-day.
Now for some reason, my back has decided to join in with the pain
thingy. for this past week I have not been able to straighten, and as
a result have been hobbling around. I think it is because of wearing
boots and not having the one inch lift on the left side. I think
perhaps that caused some instability to my back. I did go to the doc
yesterday, and he vasically agreed that what I described could be the
problem. In the meantime, I have two more days of school to get
through (with a concert), and then i have to start wrapping gifts.

I slept for about 12 hours last night off and on, which does not make
me feel  better but instead took time from things i  need to do.

This is getting real old real fast (pardon the grammar).

(((((((((((((((((((((rose))))))))))))))))))))))))  bummer, kid--your owies
and time issues.  use gift bags, sweetie, instead of wrapping paper.  (the
dollar stores have tons of them, all sizes and very pretty ones.)  then, you
won't have to aggravate your rib cage as much and it goes much, much faster
and easier than wrapping.  use the wrapping paper, you already have, as
crumpled filler in the bags.  hope you feel better soon, sweetie.

Good idea Kate...After wrapping presents this year with my hands hurting
like they did...I think that I will stock up on the after Christmas sales
buying all kinds of bags...and during the year...any sales of any thing that
could be used as Christmas bags...Yepp...My hands hurt so bad...I never
realized how OA could effect hands...I thought only RA did that...I guess
since your hands are not a weight bearing joint so to speak...and all the
weight that I carried on my knees...I blamed it for all the pain...But I
promise I never walked on my hands....

While we're on the subject, I'm waiting on, and anticipating a Christmas
gift I bought for myself:  2 pairs of Arthritis gloves (one pair for
upstairs, one for downstairs, also to help me keep my nails out of my
mouth!); plus, I ordered a "strap-on" heating pad/massager.  That means I
can strap myself in (hopefully), then can read or watch T.V. without it
slipping and sliding down the couch or chair cushions.  MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL!

I love the bags. I have purchased some big gifts though, and bags
won't do for some of those.
Thanks for the advice
I did get about ten bags today.

Rose - isn't it good doctor's have us to help them with diagnosing.  Hope
you got through the last couple of days and the concert went well.  I second
the idea on the gift bags.  I filled the bags then stuffed the tissue on
top.  Tied up the strings with ribbon and voila. Why haven't I done that
before!!  Was much easier on my hands.

I have found some boots on the internet made by Drew that look interesting
and easy to fit.  There is a guy in a specialty shoe store here that says
that they are really easy to fit to people -and can be stretched as needed.
They could probably be added onto as well.  That might be a solution for
you - winter is not going to go away up there unfortunately.
Will try to find the url.

Have a safe and merry Christmas anyhow and please take care of yourself.

I have some Drew shoes, and they are not too bad. The problem with
putting a raise on a boot is that you do not sense the ground the same
way, and it is easy to slip. Since falling is bad for me, it is not a
good idea.
Thanks for your thoughts though.

Guess what? It is snowing again. The big fluffy kind of flakes. Those
who were dreaming of a white Christmas got their wish.

Rose sending healing thoughts your way. I know that pain and hope it goes
away quickly. I think I broke another rib but this time in the back area
when coughing the other day. It feels the same way the first rib that got
broke did. So I do suspect it.

It is amazing how little it takes to do us in. I hope you are feeling much
better today.

By the way loved your yearly letter. Thanks for sending it to me.

I am glad you got it already, as I was thinking they would not get to
anyone til after Christmas.
I am still in pain and my bunions are screaming. Does anyone know why
bunions are so painful?

i have one on my right foot.  straightening my big toe with a cottonball
between the toes helps the pain a lot.  but i have no idea why it is so
painful.

there are many products on the market that hold your toe more in alignment
and that eases hte strain on the ligaments of the foot.  If you want to find
some, google things like "toe spreader" or "bunion straightener".  You can
still have pain from the overgrowth of bone at the joint though, depending on
the severity of your bunion.  Oh, and I also find any kind of wrap around my
arch will also help with the strain on the ligaments in its own way.

I meant to get mine whacked at before winter, but that October long flare
kept me from pursuing it.  If I could trust the weather to stay this mild,
I'd still do it, but I don't want to cope with recovery in a big snowfall!

Stupid question. What is a bunion. I don't think I ever saw a picture or
heard it discribed before.

> Stupid question. What is a bunion.

bunion:  Inflammation and thickening of the first metatarsal joint of
the great toe, usually associated with marked enlargement of the joint
and lateral displacement of the toe.

ETIOLOGY:  Bunions may be caused by heredity, degenerative bone or
joint diseases such as arthritis, but most often are produced by
tight-fitting shoes and high heels that force toes together and
displace weight onyo thr forefoot.

Thanks Gary,

I am being really careful. I have been coughing and sneezing for days now
and I am trying to do it right this time. ;-)

I lost count of how many broken ribs I have had now.

((((((((((((Rose))))))))))))  I hope you can spend some time on healing
during your Christmas break.  Any chance of getting lifts in your boots so
they are kinder to your back?

too many tings are getting out of control for too many of us lately.
Personally, I'n getting quite tired of this running as hard as I can in an
attempt to lose ground less fast.  I think we all need a 2-week luxery spa
vacation!  (together, of course!)
