lonnnnng week, but i'm back.   puget power finally got around to our street.
those poor guys, the linemen, i mean.  what a HUGE, and dangerous, job for
400 to 500 crews to handle!  (a million customers out of power and that's
really more like 2.3 million people, cuz 2.3 people is the average household
in our state).   sadly, there have been 18 deaths, in washington, so far,
due to the horrendous windstorm and its aftermath.  and it is very sad that
most of those deaths might have been avoidable--i say "might have been"
because who knows what may have been running through the minds of some of
the victims (not meaning suicide, but meaning lack of safety information or
misinformation or good intentions with horrible results).

y'know, i used to like to go camping.  but camping indoors is not quite the
same, nor as fun (at least you don't have to refill a woodstove every two
hours 24/7 when you camp outdoors).   i actually found myself getting a
little depressed, when kiro radio and the pse updates said i wouldn't have
power until saturday, after having been out of power since last friday (not
counting also being out of power for 13 hours on thursday night and being
reconnected in the morning, only to loose power again friday, close to 6pm).
i knew that most of that depression was brought on by lack of  sleep,
though.

still, it wasn't the longest i've been without electricity (22 days once and
11 days another time), though it was the longest stint without my partner
taking shifts with me stoking the woodstove and sleeping.   but then, the
crews surprised me by getting my house back to "enlightened" civilization
around 3pm today.  sooooo, YAAAAAYYY! for those heroic linemen (not the
football kind<g>)!!!

Wow...I know we were without power for about 4 days in 99 when the tornado
took out alot of out town...and but at least we were warm...
Last year, the week after Thanksgiving we were without Gas for 1 week... but
we had electricity...

Glad to hear that you are Safe...And back up and running...

Also...I imagine the Blizzard in Colorado and Kansas and then as it goes its
path will cause alot of power outages...Praying for all those in it's
path...

***it's a challenge, isn't it.  my home is all electric.  even the woodstove
runs on electricity (the thermostatically controlled fan), so it didn't heat
much (the best i could get the temperature of the house raised to was 58
degrees, which, thankfully, is way above freezing.)

Glad to hear that you are Safe...And back up and running...

***thanks, hon.  my poor cat shasti somehow broke one of her lower fangs,
not completely off, yesterday (i think she ran full-tilt into something hard
in the dark--lack of energy only applied to the house.).  i just noticed the
tooth jutting snaggly out of her mouth last night.  gotta get her to the vet
today.  i can't figure out how come it doesn't seem to hurt her--she's still
running and jumping around like her normal monkey self.

Also...I imagine the Blizzard in Colorado and Kansas and then as it goes its

***me too.  hopefully, those power companies still keep a complete
contingent of emergency repair people on hand (like puget power used to, but
now subcontracts out).

it's a little easier when you have two heroes (my son and 9 year-old
grandson, who is here for a week from AZ) popping in on you<smile>.  those
two sweeties brought me a couple of hot meals that my son cooked at his
place and kept loading up the kindling box for me.  (at my request, to keep
indoor firewood mess confined, and according to my design -- 4'x4'x4'
exterior dimensions-- butch built the kindling/wood box of cinder block, as
i figured we wouldn't have to worry about termites or carpenter ants eating
cinder block, on the outside wall of the house.  it has two doors on it. one
door is outside the house to load it from outside and one door in the wall
next to the fireplace--that door is almost invisible, because it is made of
the same interior 1"x8" wood paneling as the interior walls.  i didn't want
that indoor door to be too noticeable.  butch did such a great job on it,
almost 30 years ago.)  i burned almost a cord and a half of wood, trying to
warm up the house to keep the plumbing in the attic from freezing, though
mainly the livingroom had warmth.    yes.  i know, i'm blest.<smile>

Always nice when you can come out the other end of an ordeal in one piece.
Let's hope things improve for you folks out there.

yeah, it is, gary.  our electricity grid of about 1000 households had lots
of trees that took out lines and even snapped one of the telephone poles at
a neighbor's house across the street from me.  i feel for the people on
marine view drive, because the gale-force winds took down hundreds of trees
there.  the first night, when i drove home, my street was so littered by
limbs, it was like driving on a thick evergreen carpet.  i couldn't even see
the road i was driving upon, it was that littered.  glad i bought the rav4!

enjoy your holiday vacation, guy!

Yay! So glad to know you're back on! Aim and Tish got 'enlightened' a day
ahead of you. I expect I'd go to Eugene and stay with Mom, calling the
neighbors every day or so. I am a big wimp and our woodstove only heats one
small room.:(

glad to hear that aim and tish are ok.  my two sisters, mom and dad, and
alex (all of whom live within 5 miles of me) were all without power, but for
only one day.  you're right about the woodstove heating only a small area.
there was a 5 degree temperature difference between the livingroom and the
hallway and kitchen.  the hallway and kitchen connect directly to the
livingroom.  the bedrooms were even colder.  natch, the cats and i slept on
the sofa.  that was a teensy bit crowded.<smile>

Been waiting to hear how you were doing Kate.  My brother and his wife were
only out 3 days but their neighbor has been out for 7 as of today.  They had
the two of them and their dog and another family of 4 live at their house
since Sunday but they finally left the night before last (the dog peed on
the carpet and I think they figured the welcome was probably over).  Since
they have just been on holidays, had a reno done and came home in the dark
and been working full out (both of them) it has been a long week.  Susie
phoned last night and had just started shopping and deciding what to feed us
this weekend.  Allan (her husband) is somewhere on holidays in the East
(changes every day this week) and Kyle is just a little hyped up.  Been
quite a week.  Susie and Allan generally love company but think this time it
was tough.

Anyhow we didn't get the anticipated storm last night and it isn't raining
today so.....

Off to the doctors to renew prescriptions.  Have my infusion date for
January 4th.

Glad to see you have internet Kate.  Allan and Susie still don't have
internet or tv. which wouldn't be a problem but Susie tries to work from
home for a couple of hours in the morning and evening.

w0w!  your brother and sil had a full house!  that was way sweet of them.
lots of people have suffered quite a bit because of this storm.  y'know, i
heard (on the red cross radio i keep for emergencies) how only partial
electricity restoration has been occurring.  that seems strange, doesn't it.

in 1978, i think it was, we came back home from visiting butch's sister in
tahoe and the plumbing in our attic had frozen and ruptured while we were
gone.  good thing susie and allen came home from reno when they did.

as it was, and i was home the whole time, i lost all the food in the fridge
and fridge-freezer, even had to throw out about half of what was in the two
stuffed-full upright freezers (the big one is alex's upright), despite the
bags-of-ice precautions we tried.  it probably would have been worse,
without the bags of ice.

good luck with your first infusion, sweetie.  hope it starts helping you
right away!

Glad to hear you got your power back, Kate. I have friends down that way
who are still without power and they are saying they'll be lucky to have
it back by Christmas. They are in an area where a lot of trees have to
be removed before the linemen can even get in there.  I'm SO glad I
moved up here to B'ham. We flickered a bit, but that was all. We did
lose power last night for a while during that lightning and thunderstorm
that went through here. There was also a LOT of rain (the ducks in my
pond are happy :-)) and a lot of wind.  But the sun is out now, so all
is good :)))

Enjoy the warmth :)

(((((((((((Kate))))))))))))))  glad to have you back and glad that you found
a way through.

I know what you mean about the camping indoors, I had several related quips
when the hurricane dropped a tree on Mother's house and electrical panel
while I was visiting.  At least in our case though, moost of the rest of the
city had power and we were dealing with heat rather than cold.  A cool shower
at dusk and dinner at some air-conditioned location helped us sleep - even
without fans to help cool us.  Luckily, she'd just recently gone to city
water so we DID still have water!

You are sooooooo right - the power linemen are true heroes in bad weather.  I
certainly don't begrudge them overtime pay and such for restoring our power.
They really amaze me when they restore power while the storm is still raging.
