Just wanted to let you all know I managed to get my cards off this
week. I have been coping with this knee and it took me a while to
realize that my lack of energy might actually be joined to the pain I
was having. Some days it was all I could manage to get out of bed and
that is totally not like me. Anyway, taking pain pills now -- total duh
-- and feeling better just in time for the holidays which is nice.
Miss you guys.

Myron and I happened to run into (on the internet) a lady who said that
she and her family were homeless, and she had no money to make a
Christmas for her kids and asked if someone could help her out. (This
was all done through an organization here and around the world, that
allows people to give to others things that they would ordinarily throw
away. People can also ask if they are in need of things. It is called
Freecycle)
So We sort of adopted this homeless family for Christmas.
Dawn said that she her husband and 4 kids were staying with friends and
could spend the winter there. She had limited access to a computer, so
we could only exchage emails about every 3 days. But I talked to myron
at work on his last day before a 2 month lay-off. We decided we wanted
to help in some small way. So I contacted Dawn and told her of our
limited resourses, but we wanted to help in some small way. they were
so grateful. We bought each cild a small toy, And with the help of
other freecyclers, we had found them sme kids books and vcr tapes that
both kids and adults could enjoy. W prepared the fixings for a nice
Christmas dinner. A Turkey, stffing, mashed potatoes, greenbean
casserole, for her to prepare and homemade apple-cranberry salad and 2
kinds of homemade pies which I made. I was so excited to be able to
impact these peoples lives in this positive way. Especially at
Christmas.
I emailed Dawn on Monday and asked for an address so that we could
deliverChristmas to them on Saturday. Late Wednesday I got an email
from her saying Thank you for your generosity and attempt to help them
but they would no longer be there, long before Saturday. Apparently
the people they were staying with had gotten into an argument, which
eventually came to an exchange of blows. And they didnt think it was
safe for their children. It must have been really bad because they
felt the kids were safer on the street. So Wednesday afternoon, they
hit the streets with their 4 kids
I have cried about it and prayed about it and finally turned it over
to God. If you could offer a prayer for them also, I would appreciate
it.
To my ASA family May you and yours have a blessed holiday no matter
which observance is yours. Merry Christmas Happy Haukah or a Warm
Kwanza. I love you guys.

Char, prayers being sent up for those people. They really do need help.
How I would hate to be on the streets this time of year, even without the
four children.

The couple lacked jobs, but not help
There was room at the inn for one homeless family.
December 21, 2006
It all started when a panicked 57-year-old woman dashed into Mission
Bay lifeguard headquarters last week to say her husband was having a
heart attack in the parking lot. Lifeguards responded and revived the
man, 59, with oxygen.
They learned that the couple were living, along with the woman's
82-year-old mother, in their Toyota Corolla, which had been their home
for three to four months.
Lifeguard Andy Lerum contacted police, and SDPD marine safety Lt.
Hector Fuentes arrived. The story unfolded that the husband had been
laid off by a printing company. His wife had lost her preschool
teaching job because of health problems.
First, the cash-strapped couple had to give up their Rancho San Diego
home of 16 years. Then they lost their apartment and took refuge in
their car, moving from place to place and using public restrooms.
"You could tell the man was very depressed and distraught about the
horrible situation he was in," says Fuentes. "These people are
well-intentioned. They're hard-working folks who have had a streak of
bad luck."
Fuentes asked them if they had blankets. They showed him that they did.
He then asked if they had food. They said yes, but could produce only a
few crackers.
So Fuentes, Lerum and their colleagues reached into their pockets to
collect money to buy the family dinner. Then Fuentes went a step
further and contacted the nearby Dana Inn. He explained the family's
plight and got a deal on a room for them that night - for which he
personally paid.
Fuentes doesn't want any publicity. "I became a police officer
because I wanted to help people," he says. "It was just the right
thing to do. These people just needed a helping hand."
The next day the couple met with SDPD's Homeless Outreach Team, or HOT,
which found temporary housing and board downtown for the mother. The
couple, however, declined shelter at St. Vincent de Paul, saying the
beds should be saved for people who really need them. HOT Officer Robin
Hayes says, "They really need it, but they are very humble and very
proud."
A relative of the couple's agreed to take them into her apartment for a
few nights while the HOT team looks for a longer-term solution.
On Tuesday, Hayes and two colleagues were given gift-wrapped holiday
candles from the family by the mother. On Hayes' card was the message:
"Thank you so much for all of your help, concern and kindness. We'll
never forget you." The card was peppered with hand-drawn hearts and
kisses.
It was a very touching moment for the members of the Homeless Outreach
Team.

Char,
that is so sad and I will be praying for those people and you also. You did
good at trying. Take care and thinking of you always.

Char,
What a wonderful thing for you and Myron to extend
help to this family in need.
It's so great to hear from the two of you. We miss you
and hope you have a nice holiday. Drop by when you are up to it.

(((((((((((Duckie))))))))))) I hear ya, I hear ya. My costo's been flaring
outrageously and I have slept so much this week - and spent too much time
lying on the couch when awake. (The latter is a challange - puddin' likes to
crawl on me and curl up and knead and all that stuff when he sees my lying on
the couch! He's up around 11 pounds now, so that is MAJOR protect the chest
time!)
Enjoy those pain pills and keep them coming to make your holidays happy!
