The long expected final version of Internet Explorer 7 is here. After
the beta versions, Microsoft Corp. have released on the market a truly
competitive Web browser.

With enhanced security features designed to provide a high degree of
security during any Web surfing experience, a newly implemented
'Windows Customer Service Experience Improvement Program' and many more
useful features, Internet Explorer 7 appears to be a very good
alternative to Mozilla Firefox or Opera.

Let's have a look at the user interface: tabbed design, customizable
toolbar, 'Favorites Center' containing history and RSS feeds, 'Windows
Live' search engine included by default. All the open tabs can be
displayed in thumbnail mode (Quick Tabs), the search engine section can
be customized by adding or removing search providers and setting your
favorite search engine as default.

The help section has been improved: you can take a quick tour of IE7's
features, send feedback and get online support. The tools in IE7
provide a safer browsing or online shopping: the pop-up blocker filters
help you allow or block all pop-ups or pop-ups from selected Websites.
You can also build a list of exceptions. The phishing filter improves
your online security level: phishing filter settings can be manually
changed, you can report phishing Websites or check a Website. Now you
can manually manage IE7 add-ons and ActiveX controls by enabling and
removing them. As for cryptographic protection, SSL 2.0 and 3.0 and TLS
1.o protocols are used by IE7 in order to provide authentication and
communications privacy over the Internet.

Among other features, I must mention the 'Auto-complete' feature,
accessibility options, customizable security level for browsing,
content advisor, multilanguage support.

Pluses: Enhanced security features, support for Google and Yahoo!
toolbars, quick browsing experience, session restore feature,
import/export wizard (this feature allows you to import and export
Favorites, RSS feeds or Cookies to other applications or files which
can be saved on your computer).

A nice thing I noticed, after I installed this new version of Internet
Explorer, was that it can be set to use ClearType fonts. This kind of
font improves the readability of text on LCD displays. I also saw that
my Yahoo! Messenger windows were also using ClearType after the
installation of Internet Explorer 7.

Drawbacks / flaws: A download manager with pause/resume functions is
still missing. Since all current browsers are trying to comply with the
W3C standards I had to test the browser with the well known Acid2 test.
Unfortunately, IE 7 failed.

In conclusion: The final release of IE 7 can be now compared to other
competitive browsers on the market.

Hey, isn't that download link for the same domain as the one in "Best
Spyware: Webroot Spy Sweeper 5.2" from a few messages up?  Why not link to
Microsoft directly?  If this was an effort to get us to click on to your
website, nice try but we're too smart.

P.S.  I'll use Firefox before I absolutely have to switch to IE7.

More importantly, don't follow the moronic OP's link.

Interestingly, two of the cruise lines I sell (Royal Caribbean and
Celebrity) recently sent out an email saying to NOT use 7, as they
don't support it and won't until some time next year.

But FF works just fine.

Interestingly, Intuit recently sent out an email saying to NOT use IE7, as
they don't support it and won't until some time next year.

But IE7 works just fine.

Yes, that's right, IE7 works just fine with the version of QuickBooks Pro I
use, for all of the features I use.

So, where's the fuss?

I note that you don't mention whether the cruise lines you mention support
FireFox - just that it works.

Alun.

The official distribution, if one prefers not to use Microsoft Update

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.mspx

(for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 only)

Not a good idea to use such volunteered links for downloads.  Without regard
to that issue, I'd like to comment as follows --

I found that my HP printer programs wouldn't work with IE7 installed.  And
my favorite Google News gave me repeated lockups.  Probably other programs
too but I gave less notice to others.  HP issued a fix after a couple of
weeks.

It appears that there are a number of programs out there that have
incompatibilities with IE7 which presumably will be fixed after the
complaints roll in.  Best to hold off on EI7 for a couple of months.  EI7
looks a little better than EI6, but not enough to endure the present
hassles.

Certainly not links pointing elsewhere than to Microsoft.com,
or to other than the very first item you'd find in a Google search
for "Internet Explorer" (on which Microsoft page the "Download" link
is the very same as posted above, as you should certainly
carefully search and verify for yourself).

Only Microsoft can manage to wreck everything,
just to moderately improve a browser that others have already
vastly improved for years without imposing any collateral damage at all,
and without being restricted exclusively to Windows XP/2003 :)

Looks are the minor portion, as are usability feature changes.
Most people will not notice the core improvements or how
they impact securability, except by sites/codes that are broken
until their supplier fixes them.  Since MS had a very lengthy
campaign to get the work out and let providers fix their sites
and codes well ahead of IE 7 release, I just use it to measure
the degree of consumer concern of those providers.
I also gladly leave those providers behind, at least for the
time being, and enjoy the bit of enhanced easy of mind from
leaving IE 6 behind.

I'm on my 11th year online and IE7 is the best yet. No compatability issues
with my Win XP Media Edition nor my other machines XP Pro. I esp like the
popups that come up warning you if you've clicked on a phishing* webpage  (*
phishing sites are those posing as authentic websites typically sent as a
link in an Email and require you to enter some personal information which
may cause you to be a victim of identity theft)
Even with years of internet experience I been so busy sometimes that I've
almost dropped my guard and went to one of those false websites before. I
would recommend getting the IE7 download ASAP from the security stand point
alone.
OK, I'm off the soapbox now.
Thanks

It's about time that IE has begun catching up with Opera :)

I like Mozilla Firefox. It is more powerful and more compartible browser
for Windows.
