Hi,
I've just popped over from UPSA.
I'm on Enbrel and MTX for RA. I have to take 5 days of antibiotics
(Amoxicillan)for a sinus infection. I had an enbrel injection yesterday
(Thursday) and I don't know how long to wait before taking the antibiotics.
Any advice welcome-:)

Allison,
First, call the enbrel hot line and ask them.  If you need the number,
let me know.  That said, you can usually antibiotics with enbrel.  It
is more likely that you'll be advised to discontinue the enbrel until
the acute infection clears.  I am surprised your doc didn't give you
better instructions.

Thanks. i'm going to ring my RD at the hospital on Monday.. I have more
contact with them and  than my  GP.  I'd consulted her about another
problem first and was still thinking about that and did not take in what
she said about  the antibiotics.

Have you been taking Enbrel very long?  The reason I ask is because I have
been dealing with chronic sinusitis and rhinitus for several years, and
taking taking the Enbrel seemed to trigger that sinus infections.  I'd still
have the post nasal drip and rhinitis without the Enbrel, but the mucous
would be clear.   Once I took an Enbrel shot, the mucous would begin to turn
from clear to yellow and then to green by the time I took my 2nd shot.  I'd
have to stop the Enbrel and take antibiotics for a minimum of 21 days and
sometimes up to 42 days to rid the infection.   I' had been on this
"roller-coaster ride" for about 6 years.   I didn't want to stop the Enbrel
because it was helping the RA/SLE very well.   After a few weeks off the
enbrel (while fighting the infection), I'd be screaming for my next Enbrel
shot.   I felt like a "Junkie" waiting for his next "Fix" -- willing to deal
with the sinus infection.

I stopped the enbrel two months ago, took (hopefully) my last round of
antibiotics and started Humira injections 4 weeks ago... no sign of
infection yet (knock on wood) and they seem to be working.   I still deal
with the mucous associated with chronic sinusitis/rhinitis, but it's clear.

Hope this helps!

Good luck getting rid of the sinus infection.

Hi Kendall,
I'm in the Uk and have been on Enbrel and MTX for over three years. I
haven't been able to breave through my dose for most of that time. LOL .
I have had the same as you with rhinitis and nasal drip.  I  used to be
slightly  allergic to dust  etc before enbrel  but its been worse since and
continuous for a couple of years.
I also have Sjogerns and have problems swallowing and the rhinitis, or
what ever it is , is making it hard to sleep.
At the moment I am just blocked up and I have a frog in my throat and my
ears feel blocked .
Is it common to get siuns infections on Enbrel?  I don't want to stop
taking it as it
works for me.
I'm glad the Humira is working for you. I dont know much about Humira , I
will have to so some reading!

Hi Alison,    I also have had a antibiotics shot and 5 days of antibiotic
pills.  My PC doctor didn't say anything about the Enbrel shot that I take
each week.  I have also just had an appointment with my RD and told him
about the bronchitis and what I had taken for it.  He said nothing about the
Enbrel.    I really think you need to call your doctor and get them to tell
you what to do.   Why would you do the wrong thing on the word of someone on
the internet that does not know all the facts of your condition?

Hi Harvey,
Thanks, I've decided to ring my RD on Monday and ask her.
To be honest , I'd rather take your word than my GP. I used to post here a
few years ago and I think you know more about arthur than she does.<G>

Just an opinion from someone who is alot cautious about the biological drugs
and their reactions.  I would never take a biological drug with an
infection - my rd and gp are definite in the instructions that any infection
means the biological drug gets stopped until it is completely clear and I am
off the antibiotic.  The black box warnings are there for a reason in my
opinion (and yes I guess I want to scare people about this - please please
please check with your doctor and don't leave it for them to think you know
what to do or that they should tell you).  We have lost a couple of people
to infections and biologics and yes maybe they were in frail conditions
anyway.  I only know these drugs must be treated with respect .

Personally as well I would not just trust the nurses on the enbrel hotline
either.  I would only trust my rd.

Off my soapbox now and crawling back to my hole of a life.
