Legally Blind Washington Woman, 94, Recently Bowled a Score of 244
November 30, 2006 13:17
CENTRALIA, Wash. -- Esther Medley of Centralia is legally blind, but
when she bowls she can glimpse a bit of the floor to line up with the
lane.
Medley, 94, can't see straight ahead, so her 86-year-old husband Ralph
tells her which pins are left after her first ball.
That's how Medley recently bowled a score of 244, which included eight
strikes, at Fairway Lanes in Centralia. It was the second-highest score
of the year for her league.
The Medleys have been bowling in the senior league since 1979.

that's awesome! it would even be awesome if she were 94 and sighted. so,
it's just plain awesome!
more than two decades ago, one of the things butch and i learned, when we
attended yaba (young american bowling alliance) coach's training, was how to
teach the blind to bowl. contrary to common belief--there are a lot of very
fine bowlers who are sightless. my uncle, who hit the beaches at normandy
at age 17 and was made one of the youngest sgts. (he was nicknamed "sgt.
junior" by his men) in ww2, was later blinded by a granade in battle. up
until recently, when he gave up bowling, frequently carried a 200 average.
