Okay, here's the scoop. I have a lot of small bleeding ulcers throughout my
small intestines. He said it looked like classic NSAID (non-steroid
anti-inflammatory drug) damage. Then, when he found out I have been off
NSAIDS for at least 6 weeks, he seemed unsure. He said he doesn't think it's
Crohn's Disease, but he wouldn't rule it out, either. For the anemia, I have
to take 325 mg of ferrous sulfate and 500 mg of vitamin C three times a day
to rebuild my red blood cells. If I continue having cramps and spasms, I
have to have an x-ray to make sure the capsule passed, since the ulcers
cause strictures. So, basically, he doesn't know. The only thing he could
tell me for sure was the bleeding ulcers throughout the small intestines. I
guess I will spend my life with doctors who 'wait and see' if I heal up on
my own. Heavy, heavy sigh.

DeeTee, are you by any chance on mtx? I got this type of thing when I
first started the injectable mtx and ended up in the hospital because of
it. I ended up having to go on Leucovorin for it. I did the IV
version of the leucovorin at first and then switched to the pill form.
Just a thought! Hope things clear up soon for you!!!

DeeTee,
The way my RD explained it to me when I had the problem, was that my
intestinal track probably looked like a persons mouth who gets all the
mouth sores from the mtx. He said the intestinal track can get all
those types of open sores and bleed, just like I had, and the leucovorin
was a good med to help with it. If the leucovorin didn't help, I would
have had to come off of the mtx.
Might want to run that by both your RD and your Gastro doc.
Best wishes to you!!!
Hugs,
Donna G.

bleeding's coming from (hey, wouldn't it have been easier to start with
this test? just a thought. . . ). now how do you find out why it's
happening so you can prevent it from continuing? i feel for you. . .

I heard that Aloe Juice is pretty to stomach ulcers. You may want to
try that for your ulcers. However, make sure that you take high quality
aloe juice. There are studies which showed that Aloe can help to
improve the immune system. Good luck.

Dee Tee,
sorry that they are not sure what is causing it. I hope this meds work for
you and cure it or at least heal it up so that you have no more problems
with it.
Thinking of you always.

well, at least they have some idea of what is going on and what to watch for.
That's good, as it seems you were running out of tests for them to run! I
wonder if taking acidophilus and/or eating lots of yogurt would help with
this sort of digestive tract problem. It might be worth looking into -
anything that helps you heal faster would be wonderful. Melinda might have
some words of advice on what might help you heal faster. I figure with the
cruds we have, it's always possible that we just heal differently than others
- and as anemic as you've been, maybe you're just healing more slowly from
NSAID ulcers.
