I saw my pcp today and he is referring me to a specialist.  He said
there will be many tests which may end up with a need for surgery to
correct the problem.  It is not that uncommon and the results of the
surgery are always positive. I just do not want another surgery.

I have within the last six weeks had a colonoscopy, an endoscopy, a Meckel
scan, a small bowel scan and am even right this minute wearing the
monitoring equipment (after swallowing the capsule camera) for a capsule
endoscopy. I might well have to have surgery. Take it one step at a time,
honey, you can do this.

Can I join this club???

I had a colonoscopy yesterday and it turned up nothing.  So what the heck is
causing the pain in my lower abdomen?????  Every dr. has said it's probably
adhesions from ovarian surgery 13 years ago.  So why has it been bothering
me for just the last year????   This is so frustrating!

And no, it's not in my head, thank you....it's in my gut!

I wonder if the doctors who suggest 'it's all in your head' realise
they're getting the same looks from patients they'd get if they
suggested that the source of the problem was being kidnapped and
impregnated by aliens. Then again...don't eat the salad if Sigourney
Weaver drops in unexpectedly...

Hi Mary Margaret!
I suffered from periodic severe abdominal pain on and off for about a year
and a half. Docs kept believing it was a diverticular infection and would
throw antib's at me and it would clear up in a couple of days. I never
believed it although I do have some pockets. Went to the surgeon who did my
laparoscopic hernias to see if adhesions might be the cause of my trouble.
Nope, not according to him. But he did say he thought I might be pinching a
nerve in my back. Ya right. Well, guess what? That was exactly what it
turned out to be. I have caught it in early symptoms and would do some spine
flexing etc. and the pain would disappear almost immediately and not return.
At times I could feel it starting when I was in a certain position standing
or sitting and more to a different position and have the pain totally
disappear. don't know what else to say about my experience with that.

Gary, it's worth a try.  I've never been to a chiropractor before but my
husband goes to a good one.

Thanks.

We seem to be growing and showing a variety of problems!  In my case, I have
labwork that shows definite signs of malnutrition though I am, as my PCP
says, an omnivore who eats a reasonably balanced diet and takes vitamins.
Malabsorption looks like the problem and my RD was going to discuss me with
his "liver guy".  (kinda nuts that my last visit was a very serious one, but
my RD and I were teasing each other throughout!)

I have this grim feeling that more obnoxious tests lay ahead for me.

Nann,

keep us posted to how it is going.

Is this Malabsorption something the test results showed when you had the
last labs done. Or is this something that was suspected before the labs came
back.

You take care and hang in there.

well, I got a letter from my RD's office rather than a phone call.  All the
letter said was that my protein levels were low and there were
auto-anitbodiess present and he'll discuss it with me at my next visit.  He
ran about 5 antibody tests so that doesn't narrow it down much.  Obviously he
didn't think anything needed to be jumped on right away and I have so much
else going on that I'm tired of thinking about it.  I've decided to just put
it aside for now and enjoy all the upcoming holidays.  And I'll find out more
when I see him in mid-Jan.

I've been running low protein & albumin levels for about 20 months now.  It's
had both docs puzzled.  My liver checked out fine in a biopsy last winter and
the other possibilities they've thought off have been ruled out as a problem.
Protein levels had come back up almost to the lowest limit of normal so we
were just monitoring things.  Then they took a nosedive again this fall.
Liver and kidney are fine, I'm not dumping protein and I'm definitely eating
a decent diet (just too much of it!  LOL), but my labs are at the level of
severe malnutrition.  That leaves malabsorption of nutrients somehow... but I
don't have any of the classic bowel symptoms of such.  So now my docs are
working on brainstorms, investigating possibilities that I don't show classic
symptoms of.  And my RD was going to discuss me with the GI doc who is his
"liver guy".

It felt a bit strange to be told I looked good for what my labwork showed!
That was a first for me.  I'm more accustomed to RDs wondering why my labs
are normal when they see obvious signs of inflammation.

Thanks - you too!  You and Jim are always in my prayers.

Ah, Dawn - I hope he finds the problem readily and it's something that can be
fixed without surgery.  And if you do need surgery - may it be a simple
procedure with a short recovery time!
