Sure, it sounds like cup but since tomato sauce comes out
of a can maybe they mean can. You never know. (saves a
step to pour it straight from can to recipe).
You sound like a real virgin in the kitchen and I am LOL
because I just remembered an episode of the three stooges
in which Moe, Larry and Curly are hired to cater a fancy
meal and they throw everything into the recipe -- including
the cans.
I 'm not one to talk since i practically need a gps to FIND
my kitchen. I graduated from "How to Boil Water" at New
School Adult Ed program about 15 years ago but it just
didn't take i'm afraid.
I have no idea how to prepare tomato sauce. Can spaghetti
sauce do the same thing? (Does it have to contain a certain
ingredient?) Also what about drinking tomato juice instead?

I would say it's a cup since cans of tomato sauce come in various sizes.
So putting a can of something into a recipe is not a good way to state
it. I have seen recipes for tomato sauce that say one can of tomato
paste, but they specify the size in ounces. So if it just says "c", I'd
go with cup.
