today's RD visit

major sigh...........

my labs from last Thursday showed my albumin seriously plummeting again.  My
RD thought and thought and thought, then had a brainstorm and ordered some
strange tests.  He wasn't forth-coming with his suspicions, but you know I
looked up the tests.  It appears he suspects celiac disease, which is now
believed to encompass a broader range of people than previously believed and
can hit later in life - not just in childhood.

I really don't want to have it - we're talking HUGE change in eating habits
for me here!  But I've looked it up and there's a distinct possibility he's
right.  I fit many of the symptoms for adult onset, most of them having
appeared recently.  I think I'll go ahead and cut way back on the gluten
while we're waiting for the lab results.  If I'm gona be stuck with this, I
might as well get a head start on the diet changes I'll need to make.  Damn.  
Don't want this.  Then again, a maker of gluten-free products just expanded
into our town as a base of operations.......

I really don't want to have this.  Then again - if I can get back more
energy, it might be worth it.  i fear it won't cure my other auto-immune ills
though.  :(

Nann, sorry to hear this but it really isn't so hard anymore. The
gluten free products have really improved and you really can get used
to anything. If it is celiac you will feel so much better that the diet
changes will stop bothering you. It has worked that way for me.

I know that gluten-free is much easier now and getting easier all the time.  
In fact the new, local business is Heartland's Finest, whose bean flours are
reportedly a huge improvement in gluten-free flours.  Still, I'm hoping I can
have just a bit of gluten from time to time..... I keep thinking about all
that lovely Trader Joe's ravioli out in our freezer.

I'm coming to terms with the idea, especially now that I'm recovering from a
very busy and complicated Wednesday, of which this RD visit was only a
segment.  Still, I really don't want something else that has to be managed.  
I'm ready for something that can actually be CURED for a change.

If this does prove to be the diagnosis, I think I want to talk to a
dietician.  I'm  already on cholesterol watch and allergic to milk - adding
this in will complicate my diet further.  Of course, it would be nice to
actually *absorb* what I'm eating.

nann,

just catching up on posts (again). have you had the blood tests done?
if you haven't had them yet, don't stop eating gluten now because you
need to be eating it for the tests to be accurate. i know a couple of
people with diagnosed celiac disease and they do have to be very
careful what they eat and even what lipstick they use!), but the change
in their physical condition has been remarkable. i also wonder if all
that throwing up you were doing a while back could be related to this?

yet for that to have normalized yet - and I could always eat gluten again for
a few days before!

We ate out last night and that was an adventure, trying to find something
with no wheat.  I realized even French Onion soup is out with the topping and
I won't be able to do croutons on salad any longer.

I've been wondering about that nausea myself, and that weird stomach crud I
had last year with major gas and fevers ONLY in the evening.  I have allowed
myself very small bits of gluten the last couple of days - enjoying it a tad
until the diagnosis is more definite - but even so my fatigue and fogged-in
brain seem to be improving.  I can't for sure link it to that though as I've
also been pulling out of a PA flare and the improvement could be this week's
enbrel actually kicking in.  Either way - I'll take it!  It's nice to have my
brain returning.  Now, if I can just get rid of these muscle cramps!    (I am
going for a massage Tuesday in hopes of working some of the trouble out of
the muscles.)

what were the results of the blood tests for celiacs?  and what happens
next, sweetie?

well, it's been a wild week here, including our phone service, and therefore
internet, going out periodically ever since Saturday's storm.  Folks have
been having trouble getting through to us.  No news from the doctor, but I
think I will call today and ask about the labs.  I need to know what to do
next.  With my albumin having dropped to 2.1 for the second time this year,
I'm showing serious signs of malnutrition despite eating a fairly good diet.  
Gotta follow up with *some* doctor!  

(of course, today we have a funeral & reception at 11 am, so they may have to
call me back at the church.  Monday, I'll be taking our 90 year old friend to
PT again, so I need to get the doc today!)

Meanwhile, the massage is started to wear off - aching legs and some edema
again yesterday.  How can this be happening when I condsider myself to be in
good health??!?!?!
