Recently I have had a new addition to arthritis in my hands and
fingers, my thumbs go out of joint !! This is very annoying to say the
least and painful to pop them back in. Is there some supplement I could
take to help relieve this?

thanks, Jennie

I would strongly suggest discussing this with your rheumatologist.
It may be part of a bigger problem or something else which is manifesting
itself as your thumb "going out of joint".

Your doctor might also have a less painful way for you to re-align you thumbs.

Jennie, anyone could be held liable if they suggested any
treatment or medication/supplement.  They might also be
charged with practicing medicine without a license.  None
of us in ASA are doctors.

Since you're new to the group, tell us a little about yourself.
Your age, who diagnosed arthritis in your hands (MD or DO,
PCP/GP or RD - rheumatoligist), and when.

... Windoze:  taking "user friendly" to a ridiculous extreme!

Actually, although a bad idea in general to pass out specific medical
advise on UseNet its not against the law. I can suggest cyanide as a
cure and cannot be held legally responsible for the deaths of anyone
foolish enough to take it.
Now chiefs other suggestion that you tell us more about yourself is a
good one and I hope you do.

Hi back to all who responded. You will be relieved to know I am not a
federal agent in disguise trying to get a cure out of someone so I can
charge you with medical malpractive, ~~~~GRIN. I usually ask questions
and give advice on what has helped me on the Crohn's Board since I have
had Crohn's disease for 20 years or more.

I just have "regular" arthritis, not rheumatoid. I have been 'tested"
whatever that means ... anyway, age 56, and interested in supplements
and natural type remedies that have helped someone here with a like
ailment. No one seems to have experienced this thus far.

I went to the health food store today and talked to a very knowledgable
guy who works there who *suggested* some soft gels called "Omega
Relief" which has fish oil, ginger, perilla?, tumeric...etc. I will see
if this helps.

Jennie, there are more than 100 types of arthritis, and the Arthritis
Foundation doesn't list "regular" as one of them.  <g>

You didn't mention the doctor who diagnosed your arthritis.  Was
it a rheumatologist (RD) who specialized in all type of the disease?

That is because no one who has tried one or more has had any
success.  An oft use phrase in ASA is "Watch Your Wallet",
when some huckster appears with a magic formula from the
dark forest of some foreign country.

Enu oil, magnets, noni juice and every other "cure" have been
disproved by those who have been scammed out of $$$$.

Nothing works better that DMARDS, disease modifying arthritis
drugs that slow the progress destruction.  There is no miracle
formula, no cure, no supplement, not natural remedy.  Another
help is NSAIDS, non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs, to help
cope with the pain of arthritis.

I take and could recommend an omega-3 with EPA and DHA.
It's prescription-strength from my D.O/PCP.  Carefully selecting
something similar in an OTC variety might help.  But any formula
other than EPA-DHA is a big waste of money.  I would even
recommend getting more fish oil naturally with 2 or 3 servings
of albacore tuna or salmon every week.

... Computers ELIMINATE any spare time!!
Jennie R. - 05 Nov 2006 15:08 GMT
Thanks for all that information, Fire Chief... I appreciate it. I was
sorry to read that no supplements have helped much. I was vaguely
thinking about trying Emu Oil.

Has anyone tried eliminating the nightshade plants: tomatoes, potatoes
and eggplant? There seem to be books written on this helping.

Jennie

I will look at these new pills I bought and see if they have

Jennie, you really would benefit from seeing a Rheumatologist, getting
a proper evaluation and a treatment protocol that might even work. It
can make a huge difference and trust me on this as you age your
'regular' arthritis is gonna continue to get worse and harder to treat.

Johnie,

That is a good idea. I will bring it up with my doctor (actually a
P.A.) when I see her. She is very sharp and also "good bedside manner",
caring. She could give me a referral to an RA specialist.

I didn't know there were so many types of arthritis. wow. With Crohn's
it is pretty much just Crohn's Disease or ulcerative Colitis.

A further complicaton is that I can't take many types of pain relievers
because it aggravates my colon. So things are looking grim at this
point.

What Johnie said.

Or, you could cut down on the hitch-hiking, or wear a wrist brace
when waving down them truckers.

p.s. heeheehee...  Sorry, couldn't resist.  I'm not minimizing your
real pain at all, just getting you to cheer up a bit?  You'll find this group
to be a jolly bunch, and we laugh at and with each other all the time.
So welcome to the group, you belong here.  Ask anything you'd like
about your arthritis; we'll always try to help, even if all we can do is
be here for you.

And trot out your best/worst funnies.  :-)

OH that was a good one, Ginnie, hahaha. I liked that.
I have been noticing what things I do that could be aggravating my
thumbs. There doesn't seem to be anything that I do over and over
(exept for those pesky truckers, haha).
