I was wondering does RA or AS sometimes cause a low grade fever (99.5-100)
when theres a flare?

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks

Hhhhm,  good question.   I can tell you that I will know when my knees are
going to start hurting.  They get warm to the touch.   Is that a kind of
fever?   I also think that when a persons body is attacking itself in enough
areas that it could cause a low grade fever.    If I have that,,, I want an
RDs opinion on what is taking place and why.

Hi Harv,

No... that's not the type of fever I'm talking about.  Yes, my knees also
get
VERY hot to touch as well. Sometimes they'll also get red, but often is so
hot to the touch.

What I'm talking about is an actual fever.  I felt like crap this morning
which
I thought a "flare" was coming on... I had an appt at the pain clinic and
the
nurse took my temperature and it was 99.8.

I asked the doctor today, (who happened to be a different one then normal)
the same question and he stated that it's possible, when antibodies are
going
haywire or in a flare (too much inflamation) that it's possible it could
cause a
low grade fever for a few days until the body settles down again.  He stated
that I should discuss it with my RD.  I explained I had and she totally blew
me
off.. He stated it might be time for a new one.. I'm starting to think the
same
thing.

Any other suggestions or comments is very welcomed.

I don't RA...or AS...but I have alot of OA and inflammation in lots of my
joints...Also FM...My body temp runs about 97.3 normally...Sometimes when I
flare...I feel as if I have a temp...chills and all...I don't...
But then sometimes when I am in a flare...My temp will be 99 and OW I will
feel like it is a 104......I don't have to have much of a temp for my body
to react badly.
I really haven't answered your question have I. But since RA And AS is all
about inflammation...I think a temperture during a flare would not  be out
of the question.

i'm a still's [type of ra] and evening/overnite fevers go with - part of the
syndrome;  i can spike to 104 without it being unusual.

rk, I run a slight fever when in a flare. Not over 100 or so.  It seems
to correlate with a high sed rate too which means inflammation.

I think it does, at least in my own experience with RA.  And I've heard
others say the same.  Nanny

I never did find out. When my RA/Sogrens first started up I used to
sweat buckets in the evenings while lying on the sofa. I had never
sweated profusely before, except when climbing mountains etc. My shirt
used to get soaked, so much so that I was convinced that what I had was
caused by an infection of some kind. As I remember, when the Sjogrens
element of the disease subsided somewhat, so did the sweating and it
has not recurred. I used to find that tonic water helped and I drank
gallons of it. As for temperature, I don't ever remember taking it, but
would surely know if it had been much higher than usual.

Low grade fever is common with RA. I remember when I was initially in
the hospital, it was typical for the fever to rise as the day went on.

rk, for what its worth I usually run around 101 when Im flaring. Not
all but many RAers also have other flu-like symptoms when their RA is
active. It can be very unpleasant stuff. The only thing that helps is
finding a protocol that controls the RA. Good luck.

You have to be careful not to ignore all your fevers. I can usually
tell the difference between an RA spike and something else that needs
attention. Most recently mine was telling me to get my gall bladder
removed. It was accompanied by extreme gut pain so wasn't that hard to
figure out.>g<

Thanks everyone for the wonderful info!!!

Since my RD is a idiot, and my old GP stated I was "difficult" (so phreakin'
sorry that i know something
about my diseases) that I've found a new Internal med doctor and will see
her on Monday to discuss
this further and try to get to the bottom of things. (wishfull thinking).
Saw her the other day for a quick refill
on a pain med so I can continue with my physical therapy after my fusion in
July, but even with the pain
med... something isn't still feeling right.

I'm JUST SO PHREAKIN frustrated right now I could knock the first person I
came across who asked me
"how are you?"

I'll keep in touch...
