just wondering about the long term side effects of mtx. has anyone here
been taking mtx for more than a few years? if so have you been
experiencing any long term side effects? what dose are/were you on? i
read somewhere that mtx interferes with the production and maintenance
of dna and this is getting me worried since i have been on mtx for RA
for several months now (with little to no side effects) and expect to
continue to take it for a while yet (dosage is at 20 mg per week).

I have been on it since about 1993. I am on 1cc or 25 mgs by
injection. At first I experienced some fatigue, but that has not been
an issue for a few years now. Other than that I have had to side
effects and my LFTs have almost all ben in the normal range.

I have been on it for over 2 years, the only side effect I have is sometimes
fatigue but not always, at first it bothered me a lot more than it does now.
I take 20 mg a week

I took it for 5 years - went off it because my labs showed a seriously
disturbing drop in the protein produced by the liver. All other testing,
including a biopsy, showed my liver to be fine though. Both docs are
watching things and my RD IS considering putting me back on it if my
condition so warrants (and it seems to be the past few weeks).
My dad was one of the first people to take mtx for RA. He was on it for
about 23 years with no complications - at 15-20 mg per week. He only stopped
because a heart attack killed him when he was 82.

Hello,
I have been on MTX for about 15 years. I take 20mg per week (now down
from 30). At first I would get nauseous, so I had to take folate to
stop that. Now I don't seem to have any side effects. The liver is
managing. My hair did become a little thin, but then cyclosporin was
added to my medication and then I got more hair then I wanted. Don't
forget to have your blood tested regularly just in case.

Hello all,
Is it absolutely necessary to do a monthly blood test? I have had 350 weekly
injections with 15 mg MTX and my blood looks pretty nice LOL. My home doc
does the test after 1.5 or 2 months. What do you think?

I think your doctor and my doctor agree on what is best thing to do when
taking Methx or Arava. When I was taking both of them at different times,
it was once a month until they showed that my body, my liver was stable.
Then,,, it went to once every 2-3 months and at the end of taking them at
once every 4 months.

Will, what my docs did was keep me on monthly labwork for the first few
months to make sure my liver function wasn't immediately affected. Once we
reached a stable dose and my labs had stayed stable, we went to a 2 month
schedule on my labs.
