Hi Gang,

I have a question for you all and am wondering if any of you have had
this type of issue.

I have some problems with one of my elbows and it needs to have surgery,
but the orthopedic guy felt like we could wait a bit on that and I
really would like to wait for a bit.

However, I have developed this swollen area on my upper arm on the
inside of the arm just above the elbow area and I am not sure if this is
related or if there might be something else starting to rear its ugly
head.   The area swollen is about a 3 inch area around and has a very
heavy ache to it.

Any of you have anything like this before?  Any ideas of what this might
be or suggestions?

Sigh, I really hate this disease and I don't think I want it any more!
LOL.....like I or any of us have a choice!

Open to all suggestions, opinions, ideas, etc.

Thanks everyone and sending healing pain free prayers/vibes out to all
of you arthritis warriors!!!

De-lurking here for a mo....

That sounds a tad large and a little off-place for a nodule  (usually
no larger than a mothball, if you are old enough to recall what one
looks like) that afflict many of us with RA, but it might be one.

Is there any redness to the swelling? There are lymph glands in the
area, too. See the link below.

It sucks and I am off Humira until an infection clears. So what if I
feel like someone rolled me downstairs a few times?

Hi Boron,

Nope, no redness and it doesn't feel like or look like a nodule or at
least not any of the nodules I have.  Just swollen, firm, and very
achey.

Sorry to hear you have to be off your meds.   Sure hope you clear the
infection fast so you can get back on your meds SOON!!!

My Go Blue was in reference to the ]
U of M Wolverines, but later tonight I'll probably be wathing the tigers
and pulling for them as well, so guess it is for both!  LOL...........I
am a very avid fan of the
U of M wolverines though!!!

Wooooohooooo!!!

It may be worth a call to the doc, come Monday. Tried hot compresse4s

Oh, me, too. Being off, coupled with a high pressure weather system ,
makes for a lot of misery. Pretty weather, though.

as long as there are no apparent signs of infection, you might try using
moist heat on it today.  That might help whatever it is break up and go away.
Of course, as much as you hate to hear it, you should call your doctor
tomorrow if it hasn't gotten *significantly* better.

Well, the Tigers have 6 games for a comeback.  Michigan was pretty much a
shoe-in in yesterday's game, in my mind.  That comeback of the other team a
bit west of you was really something though!

Gators were off - giving us all some time to recover from the heartbreak of
last Saturday's loss to Auburn.

Hi Donna,

No, I have not had that type of issue.  I have an elbow replacement,
and mod-severa RA in the other elbow, and I have not experienced any
swollen areas outside of the joint.  Does it feel like a pocket of
fluid?

Hi Bonnie,

Nope, it is just swollen, rather firm to the tough, no redness, but a
very heavy ache to it and not right at the joint, but the inside of the
elbow but on the upper arm part.   Popped up rather suddenly, so I
suppose it could be fluid but it seems kind of high up for fluid?   Very
weird!

I am not sure Donna, but two things came to mine when I read your posts.

One is could it be a blood clot from your surgeries to the hands. I am not
sure what the symptoms of blood clots are.

Second, I was thinking possibly tendonitis. I think they call it golfers
elbow. I know I had something similar one time and I had to wear a velco
strap on the arm above the elbow.

I would see a dr about it though to be sure and rule out anything that could
be serious.

I can only tell you what I would do.   I would ice the elbow on 15 min and
off 15 min.  It is the weekend and you are not going to get your doctor
probably but Monday for sure I would be in his office.

You're gonna think I'm nuts, but have you carried anything by hooking
it on that part of your arm? Grocery bag, tote bag, etc? If my hands
hurt and I've got groceries I usually slide my arm thru the loops and
carry the bag with my elbow so I don't drop it...but then I end up with
a huge swollen section (has the texture/hardness of a mosquito bite,
but is a big red ugly bump) where the bag was hanging, and it aches for
a couple days and then goes away. Took me a long time to figure out
what was causing it - now I make the kids carry the bags ;)

Hope it feels better soon!!

Hugs,
Kimmy

Kimmy,

Nope, I don't think you're crazy at all!

Actually, since I have had my hand surgery, I have been carrying a whole
lot more things, including my oxygen bag, with my arm or close to my
elbow, so that may be a contributing factor to what ever is going on!
Never even thought about that!!!

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions!!!

Will more than likely either give my pcp a call tomorrow or ask the RD
on tuesday when I see him.  It is still not red, but is now getting
rather warm to the touch, so something is going on!

Hugs to you all and keeping all in my prayers for healing, improvement,
finding the right magic bullets, less pain, etc etc etc!!!

When I walk home from the grocery store, I hug the bag against my
body and left the frame of my body carry most of the weight.  This
reduces most strain on the arms and hands.  I do the same when
carrying trash and cat litter to the Dumpster, and bags from the car
upstairs to the condo.

... It's better to give than receive......what did you bring?
Donna G. - 26 Oct 2006 19:56 GMT
Hi Kate and everyone,

Saw my RD on tuesday and he really wasn't sure what was going on.   Told
me to just keep doing warm compresses and keep an eye on it and if it
didn't start to get better or got any worse to let him know and he would
consider a round of antibiotics to see if that would help.   He said it
didn't really look like a cellulitis and since its not right at the
joint, he didn't think it was an effusion of somre sort, so he was a bit
baffled.   I'm not beginning to think that it is just part of a bad
flare as I have developed some swelling and pain and stiffness in my
lower back as well.   Lots of generalized pain all over, so my guess is
the ole RA is just raising its ugly head a bit more right now.    RD
said it is still too early to know if the rituxan is going to work or
not.   Man, I sure hope so!!!

Thanks to all of you for your input and most importantly for being so
patient with me this past year.   Has been a really tough year
physically, financially, and emotionally and you all have been so
patient with me even when all I have done is whine and haven't been much
support or shown much friendship to anyone!

Sigh, please lord let this coming year be a bit easier!!!

Am heading up north on the 3rd of nov.  That is the 1 year anniversary
of when my brother passed away last year.   Will be a very tough trip,
but the whole family is gathering just to be with my sister in law and
to support one another.  Has been tough on all of us this past year.
Sometimes it still doesn't seem possible that he is gone.   I sure do
miss him something fierce!!!

In any case, will try to be more supportive and around a bit more in the
coming year!!!

Hugs,

.

Donna, don't make me come up there and rap you on the knuckles with my
ruler. After all the support and love you have shared over the years
you are the last person that should ever feel quilty about not being
around enough. My god girl you have had a bad year. You need and
deserve our support more than ever. Any energy that you have needs to
be focused on your health. When you get all healed up / then and only
then are you allowed to worry about any of the rest of us. okay...okay
then.>g<

Donna,

Over the years you have done many things for all of us. We don't expect
anything out of you when you have been going thru all that you have this
year. We miss you being here. But we are willing to have the new improved
version back when things are going better. You take care of yourself and
rest up and get well.

We know you have had us in your thoughts and prayers and that is alot for
you to do at this time.

You take care and I hope your travel up north goes well. I know it will be a
rough trip seeing what it is for. But you have been so strong, so I know you
can do it. I know you do miss your brother dearly. My heart goes out to you
sweetie.

You take care and heal up. We will be waiting here till you can come back
one day and say guess what I am doing so much better. That will be a
blessing for us all.

The elbow thing might be from you having to use that arm more instead of the
actual  hands so just give it time to heal with the rest of you. It might be
like a tendonitis kind of thing.
