A relative just informed me that a dear 33 year old female friend of
hers was just diagnosed with RA.  The girl is in great pain and can't
even leave her bed.

The problem is that her husband lost his job and they have no medical
insurance or money to buy the expensive drugs she may need.  Years ago
when Kitty and others were on this board they shared ways that people
with RA could get the drugs free to save their lives.  Does anyone
remember what one has to do under these circumstances?  Also can you
tell me what is the newest drug being used to help those with RA?  We
want to give this dear girl some hope that she can survive this painful
disease.   My thanks and appreciation to anyone who can share any advice
or information this young couple may need to get the help the wife
needs.

Thank you so much!

Hi Bea,,,,  I hope she is under a RDs care.   I have been in the same
condition as she is in and with no insurance,,, the newest medicine may not
be the way to go.  She could ask her RD if  he/she has an on going drug
trial that she can get in.   I remember the discussions about the time that
Kitty was taking part here but I have had a couple of hard drive failures
where all saved stuff was lost.   I can not help with information from that
time.

MTX is cheap as is prednisone. Prednisone will get her out of bed but
MTX will help keep the disease from progressing if she is lucky.

Try www.needymeds.com

They have links and information on how to get assistance through the
drug manufacturers.

I hope she gets some help soon.

Also http://www.rxassist.org - another site that is sometimes more up-to-date
on some of the assistance programs.

Also, many doctors today are willing to help out A LOT with providing free
samples, though those aren't available for the most expensive meds.  When we
had no prescription coverage, most of my meds came through a combination of
sampling from my doctors and a pt. assistance program for my arava.  The I
shopped around for the best price on the couple of scripts I had to get from
a pharmacy.

Unfortuantely, with no health insurance at all, she may run into problems
with paying for office visits and testing.  As hard as it is to swallow one's
pride and look into public assistance, it may be time for them to find out if
their state has a "medically needy" type of program.  Future employability is
so limited for both of them with her so ill - ultimately it would be better
for the state to help get her treatment.

I found this in an old sent file.

news:alt.support.arhtritis       is a good place to talk to people that take
the same items you are thinking about.

Here are some sites where you can find out almost anything about the
subject.  I suggest that you print out this post if you can.   I have given
you wayyyy too much information for a person to understand or go through
before you get tired and say    what the heck and stop.

Ps    Please notice that none of the below is commercial and none of it is
going to tell you what the best thing to do is.    You are going to have to
do that for yourself and it is best done with the help of a Rheumatologist
