Nann Bell - 14 Oct 2006 14:44 GMT Hey, you other northern midwesterners - are you hurting like the dickens from this weather change? It's been straight downhill for me all week - both joint pain and muscle cramping are tormenting me. I'm hoping it's jsut the topsy-turvy weather, but the patttern makes me fear that Enbrel is not holding me. I've been off mtx for almost 8 months now and that's just about right on schedule for when single DMARDs failed to hold me any longer in the past. Well, I see my RD on the 1st - come to think of it, I'm probably due for labs.

Cindy - 14 Oct 2006 14:58 GMT Well Nann, I live in OK and I am hurting...and flaring...Don't have RA, just FM and OA....but my body is really telling me about this weather roller coaster we are on...There is a front coming in tonight bringing rain and cooler temps...We need the rain so I try not to complain.. Hope you get to feeling better, and that it is just the seasons changing for you and not your Enbrell not working... Hugs Cindy

Nann Bell - 14 Oct 2006 18:14 GMT > Do you have RA? The weather doesn't affect my RA. > Thumper Mine's PA - temp changes, rain, etc. don't affect it but major barometric swings often do. And we've had major changes this week, though I haven't watched the pressure daily and it's been steadily worse each day. I really don't like it that my index fingers are starting to twist again. sigh... hopefully it's the pressure and will improve when the weather settles a bit this week. It usually isn't this bad when that's the problem though.
Got a 4 hour trip downstate coming up for the funeral of the former rector here. We didn't really know him but he was so loved here that the pastoral thing to do is to go. If we don't need to give a ride to anyone else, we'll stay overnight which will be much easier on me and will lessen the chances of a car-deer close encounter on our drive home.

Right now, one neighbor who might have ridden with us is hurting too much from her PMR to go and I don't like that much either. Life is complicated.

is this the former rector that had pancreatic cancer. No matter who it is, my thoughts go out to all involved.

Once it became apparent that the chemo was doing nothing to even slow the cancer, they stopped it and he went quickly.

Squirrely - 16 Oct 2006 16:32 GMT Oh Nann,
I am glad he went quickly. That way he didn't have to suffer so much more. But still I am sure it is such a loss to all that loved and cared about him. I wish they would find some kind of cure for all this cancer stuff.

(It's almost never detected until it's already stage 4) I think they are getting a lot closer, but 10 years down the road doesn't help the current victims, such as Steve and Carole's friend.

Squirrely - 20 Oct 2006 17:55 GMT I understand that. The way they have made leaps and bounds with medical stuff you would think they could find some of these cancers sooner than they do.

it seems to be that time of the year again to pull out the microwavable pads, mitts and foot/ankle slippers and the electric heating pads. sometimes those help me and sometimes they just make me feel like i'm doing something to help myself.<smile>
i suspect this is going to be an early starting, long cold winter. hope not. feel better soon, sweetie.

Joan Carter - 15 Oct 2006 02:28 GMT >i suspect this is going to be an early starting, long cold winter. I have a feeling you may be right, Kate. The weather forecasters are predicting a milder winter. That probably means long and cold and snowy! I hope they are right and we are wrong, although we do need snow and cold for crops to do well next spring. It's hard to know what to wish for.
I do think you are right about barometric pressure changes and fluid shifts. It's not the lows and highs that get me, but the changes. --- Joan
Carole - 15 Oct 2006 17:36 GMT > this northwesterner is feeling it, too. i suspect barometric pressure > changes playing havoc with joint fluids again. i get the muscle cramping > too, when i get too cold. Me too. In my new apartment I'm on the second floor so I can leave my bedroom window open a little which I like as I love fresh air. But I also tend to kick the covers off in the middle of the night and then I wake up early in the morning and my legs are freezing! And when I go to move, I get cramps in my legs...and it doesn't make me happy. Maybe I should try sleeping with leggings?
Carole
Squirrely - 16 Oct 2006 01:14 GMT Carole,
that might be a good idea. I know when it was warm and hot out. The fan even though facing me would somehow blow the air up and around me to get my back. I would wake up so hurting. So I found that if I went to bed with a tshirt on to warm my back, it was better.
Now that it is getting cooler I am having the same problem and I don't have my window open. You can feel the coldness coming in the window with it closed.

***i have the same problem. i figure air that is circulated by a fan must be generally a little cooler than ambient air. as hot as it was this summer, i couldn't sleep at all without a small quilt across my knees.
Now that it is getting cooler I am having the same problem and I don't have my window open. You can feel the coldness coming in the window with it closed.
***yep. i suspect that's why heavy draperies were used for window dressings.

i'm with you. i leave a window open, too. last winter i resorted to sleeping in butch's wool hunting socks. they were too big for me, too big to stay on. so i bought wool socks that fit me, for bed.LOL

Nann Bell - 16 Oct 2006 05:24 GMT > i suspect this is going to be an early starting, long cold winter. hope > not. feel better soon, sweetie. Despite the El Nino talk, all indicators here are of a long, hard winter. No indian summer for starters - straight to late fall. And the fir trees are just loaded with cones - another indicator. The squirrels' coats aren't that heavy yet, but you can't really judge that for another week or two. But even the local natives say our Oct. 13th snow was way too early. We may really appreciate going to see the family in Florida for Xmas!
I'm definitely in the mode of getting into fleece pants as soon as I get home - partly to save my hands doing zippers, buttons, etc, but even more to keep the leg muscles warm. Ya do what ya can!

Nann Bell - 16 Oct 2006 05:24 GMT > nann, whatever's causing it, i hope you fel better soon! > > diane Thanks. At least the muscles that cramped up Thursday are a bit better this morning. I'm not limping as much! It just isn't fair when your traditional way of stretching actually cramps you up. I forgot when waking from my nap Thursday and pointed my toes while stretching - instant calf cramps that took days to ease. Gotta remember to get the foot flexed.
We won't discuss the joint pain.

get off that stool before you fall and hurt yourself. Didn't you learn anything from dancing on tables. (for those that don't know this is a joke.)

Squirrely - 16 Oct 2006 01:08 GMT I feel for you Nann.
I flare all the time when it gets cooler and wetter and storms come in. I know two days before a storm comes in that it is coming. Then when the storm hits it goes away.
I am finding that I have to wear warmer clothes etc to protect my sensitive areas.
Like today it is 67 here. Not that cold. But I have to have a mens undershirt, tshirt and thermal shirt on to keep my chest and back from hurting so bad. On days when it is lower than this I have to wear thermal underwear too to protect hips and knees. That chill gets in there and finds the areas that are bad. So sometimes I end up sweating because I really am too warm, but if I take the stuff off then I really suffer in pain.
Take care and I hope it stops soon for you and that it is not the Enbrel stopped working.

Nann, I haven't felt any difference with the weather change, but I haven't been flaring much this year. I'm still feeling the exhaustion and fatigue from fibro, but not the pain. I think I can deal with that, at least on most days!!
BTW, Nann, I think you're only a few hours north of me. Maybe we should do lunch sometime :)

At least when you aren't flaring much, you have a better idea of how you will feel from day to day. That's an advantage, especially when you're newlywed with work and school to attend to!
My muscle cramping has improved a bit - until I forget the next time and do something the way I used to! heehee
> BTW, Nann, I think you're only a few hours north of me. Maybe we should > do lunch sometime :) Am I remembering rightly that you are in Indiana? We are now way north in Michigan, which makes it a matter of several hours just to escape the state in any direction. Even the local airport is expensive enough that it's a 2-4 hour drive to affordable airfares! Still, we have plans to visit Mike's kin in the St. Louis area next Sept. and might be able to work out a detour.
