Dear Folks,
You may remember that I've been looking for a job for some time now.
I've finished homeschooling with my kids and time to return to work.
However I'm out of skills and out of date! And I wanted to keep
flexible hours and my husband just didn't want me doing some jobs that
I located. But today I had the interview that I've been trying to get
for about a year. I was hired! And I go for orientation in two weeks!
I'll be substitute teacher in the local public school system and yes I
signed up for high school!
Thanks for the support!

Good for you. If it is anything there like it is here, there is a
teacher shortage, and not many on the on-call list. You should get
lots of work. One plus is that you will not need to write reports!

Congrats, Vickie,
You'll have a great time. I subbed while taking my junior and senior
years of University and had a blast. Try to assemble your own bag o' tricks
to use if the reg. teachers don't leave enuff to keep the kidz busy.
And as #1 said, no grading homework.....plus no long boring faculty
meetings, no lesson plans and no after school activities: at the end of each
day you really are done. :-)
Do I sound like I miss it? LOL

Hey Rosemarie, what should be put in a bag of tricks. I worked in
preschool as a sub and had an entire cardboard box full of tricks. I
could keep them busy all day long!
Thanks!

I am Rose Marie, but not the one you mean. I am not sure what #2 kept
but I know our really good TOCs (Subs) keep lots of books in their
bags plus activities to go with them. Activities that can be done at
any elementary grade are best. Have some hands on math game (ala Box
cars and one eyed jacks) and science experiments that can be done in a
pinch. Have some cooperative learnnig games too. If you can get a copy
of the curriculum, you can familiarize yourself with which concepts
are taught at which grade level.

(I always plan for about three hours if I know I am going to be away.
LOL)

Hiya,
For middle and high school I used puzzle pages...word search and math
pages; logic puzzles for high school.
If it was a class I knew from having had before I'd do some basic first
aid instruction. Everyone needs a little first aid knowledge. When I was
given Band class for a full week they knew a LOT of first aid when I was
done.
And everyone got exposed to critical thinking skills thru questioning
strategies :-)
My older son was very impressed at his high school when a substitute had
them earn coupons for I Pod downloads...so there's something for your bag,
as well.
Try looking online for Teacher Resources for some more ideas.
HTH!
