Hi All,

I've been reading all the postings and find them all very informative. Here's
my scenario. For years I've had pain in my right hip only and lower back pain.
Sometimes I'll get tingly sensations on that side of the body, but not that
often. I get bad pains in my leg as well. It's worse when I sit too long,
stand too long, and at night. It wakes me up quite often and I feel like my
leg needs to be stretched. I even had one incident a couple years ago where I
woke up and couldn't walk. The pain in my back was so bad I had to crawl on
my hands and knees and even that was difficult, as I just didn't seem to have
any strength to hold myself up. After a couple days, it just went away.  I've
been searching around, trying to figure out what kind of doctor I should go
see, now that I finally have health insurance. I'd rather cut to the chase
than mess around with a GP, as my employer is not too sympathetic about
taking time off to see doctors. Any suggestions on where to start?

Hello!  Welcome to ASA.  Sorry we had to meet under
these circumstances.  You are going to be hit with a
number of inquiries about your state/age/family, etc.
Answer any you feel aren't too personal, shun the
others.

To answer your question, a rheumatologist (rheumy or RD).
They are specially trained in the diagnosis and treatment of
the 100+ forms of arthritis.  Blood tests, X-rays, possibly
MRI or CT scans.

Your symptoms sound like mine in 1975-76 before I saw
a doctor and was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis.
It affects mostly the lower back before spreading to the
hips/legs/knees and the shoulders/neck.  I was given a
20 pound lifting restriction in 1979, later lowered to 10.
Loss of cartilage plus lots of wear and tear meant a total
hip replacement in the summer of 2000.

But remember, none of us are doctors and are not qualified
to give medical advice or make a diagnosis.  Someone may
say "it sounds like......" but that is not a proper diagnosis.

We can give non-medical advice, offer a shoulder when one
is needed, crank up the ASA prayer machine, share our
chocolate (if a certain thief hasn't wiped out the cache),
send you to URLs such as one for the Arthritis Foundation
http://www.arthritis.org and dozens of others piled thick
with data - which often results in "information overload"
for the newcomer.

So find a rheumy -- you didn't say where you're located.
Perhaps search the American College of Rheumatology
http://www.rheumatology.org for your state and the
name/address of a rheumy in your area.

And don't go into hiding.  Come on back and let us know
how you're doing, what you're doing, what the doctor
says.

... Only a lack of imagination saves me from
... immobilizing myself with imaginary fears.

Hi Chief,
I'm 43, live in the the Gulf Coast area of FL, south of Tampa. I have a desk
job, which makes it worse because I sit for long periods of time. I have to
get up and stretch every so often. If I forget, I end up in pain later on.
Thanks for the URLs. I'll check them out.

My 36-year-old "baby" (the youngest of 4 sons) lives on the
coast just north of Tampa with his wife and 2 (soon to be 3)
kids.

That was one of my problems in my latter work years before
disability retirement.  I loved it when my pager sounded and I
was able to respond outside to an incident.   <g>

You are welcome.  But remember the "information overload"
mentioned earlier.  You can become overwhelmed by all the
site on the WWW.

... Just for today, I will not spend 16 hours in the office at the
... keyboard.  Instead, I will move the computer into the bedroom.

Hi Betty,
Not sure about ra, but it sounds more like lower spine osteo or ddd. Check
out the links and see if you recognize yourself in them.
Get an xray of your lower back for starters and hopefully an mri after that
as it will show much greater detail.
After that you will have a better idea of where you stand.
I have similar symptoms and have moderately severe ddd in my lumbar area.
