might be down again for awhile. Hard drive is dumping me again. Boy the boys
are ticked at me. They go mom another hard drive failure. You are hard on
hard drives. We are hoping to get it fixed over the weekend if everything
goes well. Hopefully it doesn't die before then.

If something should happen that I can't get back on right away I will let
someone know so they can let you know.

Missed you all.

Thats what basically my son said last night. He said mom if you would not
kick the computer you wouldn't wreck so many hard drives.

I think it is the power surges we have here. They are bad. I have a UPS but
it is an older model. I think I need a new one.

Heya Squish,

Have the boyz get ya a surge strip. It's like an extension cord with 6
or more slots to plug into but whole strip itself is surge protected. It's a
lot less $$ than another UPS.

And then move the tower away from ya! Mine's gotta be at least 6 feet
away or I mess up the hard drive. :-)

Hugs from Rosie

It is plugged into a surge protector on the wall. The ups is anyways. It is
one of those 6 plug ones. Then we have a 6 plug long one running off of that
to plug all the other stuff into. Boy that is alot of plugged in stuff for
one wall outlet.

I will ask them about moving it, but I don't think they can move it too far,
not enough room in this room. ;-)

First, same circuit in the wall protector is also in UPS.  That
should have been obvious to anyone making a technical recommendation.
Second, anything that would work on computer power cord is already
inside computer power supply ... if computer is not using a 'dumped
into the market to sell cheaper' power supply.

Power supply's job is to provide disk drive and everything else with
stable voltage.  Disk drive voltage must not vary even when AC mains
cause incandescent lamps to glow at only 40% intensity.  Are your
incandescent lamps dimming that much?  If not, then power supply must
provide perfect power to disk drive - not interruptions and no damage.
Many computer assemblers don't even know how electricity works.  They
buy power supplies only on dollars and watts.  Then all kind of strange
computer problems occur - traceable to a 'good deal' power supply.

Discovering a power supply problem takes less than 2 minutes with a
3.5 digit multimeter should you personally want to solve the problem.
Swapping parts to fix problems too often means buying most of a
computer all over again.  Is it a power supply or some other part of a
power supply 'system'?  If power supply is good, then and only then are
you ready to move on to other suspects.

If power supply is not the problem, then a number of other tests or
diagnostics should be executed. Not difficult to perform.  The most
difficult part is explaining the solution and maybe obtaining those
diagnostics.

Meanwhile surge protector is recommended too often by those who,
again, don't know how electricity works.  Power supplies must perform a
long list of functions.  If not, then numerous strange computer
problems occur intermittently and repeatedly - as computer owner
replaces same parts but again and again without fixing the actual
problem.

Thanks will show this to the boys and hubby. Both boys are computer techs so
I am sure they know what they are doing. Also hubby knows electrical so they
are handling it.

LOL, tell the to buy you a sturdier hard drive!  The original on this
computer lasted 2 years (and it's a Mac!) but the replacemnt my bro put in is
at 4 years and counting despite harder wear.  Go figure.

Welcome back and I hope you can stay for a while.  Rest up while you are
off-line!

Thanks Nann,

I will get as much rest as I can while I am off the puter. It might only be
for the day that it takes them to put in the harddrive. Longer if it goes
before Jim gets it there to them.

M&P,

Hi daughter,

This may work for Rosie also, have the boys put a grounded metal edge on
the computer desk or get a grounding strap that is worn on the wrist or
ankle.

Sending Good Thoughts,
{{{{Jo}}}}

Thanks Dad,

I will show this to the boys and hubby and see if one of them can do
something about it.

Thanks Kate,

I sure hope they do too. But probably no such luck. I seem to have bad luck
with hard drives. ;-(

Hugs back at you. I hope you get your results soon and that they are good
ones.
