Ah well, I suppose it comes to many of us. After four years of hoping
it wouldn't happen and dreading that it would, I now have a date for
the thr - October 27th. I have seen 4 orthopods and think that this
guy is the best of them. I have worn my femur head well down and bored
into the acetabulum somewhat, so the man says that he will fit a magnum
cup if
possible, otherwise it will be bone graft reinforced with a cage and
then a normal sized prosthesis. I told him I'd go for the magnum given
a chance.

No doubt the fear will increase as the day gets closer and there are
all those will I survive it thoughts (I'm 72). As I have got older
though I have realised that old p[eople are simply your people trapped
in an old body. I also have RA, but that is reasonably well controlled
by enbrel

I was 63 when I had my THR.

Pack a good suppy of crossword puzzles and joke books
when you go to the hospital.  Nothing will get you through
the THR better than a sense of humor and something to
occupy your time.

Get on the good side of the nurses.

I did that with humor with one nurse who kept coming
into my room, asking, "What's your pain level?  How do
you feel?"

I replied, "My TB is bothering me."

She backed up in horror, shouting, "You have TB?"

"Yeah, a tired bottom from being in this bed all the time."

And my son brought me a good stash of fresh, locally-
made chocolates that I shared with those gals.  That
helps when you're not considered "just another patient."

Gee, Chief, I would have loved having had you as a patient. You are right, that
sort of approach gets you noticed, and even though everyone is meant to be
treated the same it's hard not to notice someone like you. Plus, it makes the
nurses' job much more enjoyable. Good for you.

Well, if my mother hadn't met and married a U.S. Navy chief
and become an American citizen, I might have been born in
Canada and had you for a nurse.   <g>

no way Firechief, you couldn't have been that old. Shoot you can't be that
old now. Remember I saw you. You still look like a spring chicken.

Now since you are sending me choc. to say that, when can I expect them.
LOL ;-)

No really I didn't think you were over 60 yet. Goes to show how good I am
with telling age by looking.

But I guess it is that I see how young at heart people are and don't really
see the gray or white hair. OH well. ;-)

I'll be 70 in November.   The trip in October is Mary's present.
She wanted to take me to Hawaii, but I'm not flying anymore.

I'll see if I still have URL for one of my two shops.  <g>

That is a switch.  I have always been pegged at 5 to 10 years
more than my age.

I was 16 when Ike was inaugurated in January 1953.   Five of my
schoolmates and I cut classes to see it on TV.  I was the only one
able to pass for 21 after we decided that T-Bird and 7 would be
nice to have during the broadcast.

Squirrely - 23 Sep 2006 00:52 GMT
Firechief,

Like you I have always been pegged as older than I am. The only time I
wasn't was when I was around 23. I got carded in Reno, and my cousin who was
younger and standing beside me didn't. Then I also got carded buying cigs.
But since then boy, I get accused of being Jim's mother and he is actually 5
yrs older than me. I hate him with his coal black hair and me with salt and
pepper. I do look like his mother. ;-)

I had a (now deceased) co-worker whose hair turned snow
white around his 21st birthday.  His father was deceased and
his mother never had a driver's license, so he was her driver
for doctor appointments and shopping.  They also ate out often.

One evening at a restaurant, the waitress took Mrs. T's order,
then asked, "And what would your husband like?"

For a short time after that incident Ron tried to dye his hair
but gave it up, deciding it wasn't worth the time and effort.

... "Good morning"  --  the ultimate oxymoron.

You beat me by a week but I've 3 years more than you. Had my other thr
about a year ago and the worst is those nagging rehabitulators. (Is that
a word?) Good luck.  ;-)

Bud, you remind us too.  Okay!

Bud,

are you saying you also are going in for THR a week after Peters.

You will have to pardon me. We have grass fire smoke in the area and I am
not getting enough oxygen to the brain. So forgive me if this sounds stupid.
I can't think.

Just wondering because I am putting all going in for surgery, those in
hospital, those that have other needs on a prayer list so I can be praying
for their needs.

Yep, November 3rd is opening day. ;-) BTDT with the other hip about a
year ago. I wish I had smoke/fire as an excuse for my flagging brain but
just the agony of the ages is all I can come up with. All tho'ts are
kindly appreciated but I'm fairly resigned to it. My concern is not if I
should kick off but a side complication like a stroke would leave me
unable to kick at all. LOL!
Wishing a good Autumn opening day to all y'all, ya heah? :-)

Ok, glad we got that straightened out. I will add you to my prayer, healing
vibes and good thoughts list for then. PLease remind us again as it gets
closer to that time.

The smoke was a convient excuse. I am most brain dead. But it sounded better
the other way with the smoke.

Calif. is burning. Too many fires from these terrible winds.

You take care. Thinking of you always.

Peter, may all go well and your fear be unfounded.  Please remind us closer
to date so the prayers can be increased for you.

Peter,

I'm 59, but heading real soon for a THR myself.  Hope the fear
dissipates before you go to the hospital.  If it's really bothering
you, discuss your fears with your doc and/or your surgeon,
and maybe they can allay the fear with good information
that may be lacking.

Good luck!

((((((peter)))))), most of us go through the nervousness stuff before most
surgeries.  or maybe i should say, i do.  whatever makes you most afraid is
exactly what you need to talk to your surgeon about.  he'll help you with
that, cuz surgeons deal with patients' fears all the time.

will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers for the 27th of oct.

Peter,

you are in my thoughts and prayers. I will be praying for a good surgery and
quick healing. Please remind us again closer to that time. You know us with
brain fog. I did write it down but that doesn't say much since I lose papers
too. ;-)

You take care and I hope it really works for you and does wonders for your
ability to get around.
