> Kelly who does understand the beaver tail (canadian through and through)
Hello there Kelly Cannuck!
And of course, to confuse the southerners, beaver tail can have multiple
meanings as well!
Have you ever had the baked kind with your morning coffee? Really
popular in Ottawa/Hull and making inroads here in downtown Toronto.
BTW, I haven't been to the Ex for a number of years because of my
disabilities, but I live near two GO Train Stations. They are small and
not yet converted with ramps, but I can get on one, and get on the
downtown train without any stairs ( I can walk limited distances but I
don't do stairs), go to the Ex (fully accessable) come back and get off
at the station just past me and get off with no steps.
The Boy Scouts of Canada have for years offered free pushing around of
disabled people in wheelchairs at the Ex, but now they have scooter
rentals for $30. for the day.
I booked a scooter for the 31st and am going down to raise hell. I'm
planing going through the Horse Palace with it so I hope they don't mind
any dobbin's bobbins that may stick to the wheels! <g>
Can't wait to get my own machine as about two thirds of the TTC buses
are scooter accessable (you can drive your scooter right on the bus) so
this will really let me get out.

I haven't tried buses simply because they don't go by my house except 6:00
in the morning and 6:00 at night. With the lift in the van though since I
can drive part of the day the scooter is well used. I can unload it and put
the last parts together on it within 5 minutes.
The hardest part of a scooter is anticipating problems. I have gone on
paths and found they end in a non handicap position (ie no graduated slope)
and had to turn around, have discovered overgrown shrubs and had to turn
around. Today I had to park on the street, unloaded okay and then
discovered that in order to get onto the sidewalk I had to go quite a
distance on the road. Was a little uncomfortable with that. Parking lots
are better but some are only for the mall and are monitored. Some stores I
park my scooter and use my cane. Also have to think whether a handicap door
opens out or in and what side opens. Use my cane regularly to hit a button
to open the door so I don't lose my scooter direction.
Have a great time at the exhibition. i will be demonstrating quilting at
ours the long weekend and will use my scooter to comfortably travel around
the fair. Thank goodness for that word comfortable.
