Windows ME and XP utilize a restore utility that backs up selected files
automatically to the C:_Restore folder.

the files created by the system restore funciton...every single one
since you had the os installed...

partial answer - 'cause there are times when a .cpy file might be used,
but in general:

they can be deleted if you're certain you won't be 'going back' with a
restore...you can also adjust the amount of hard disk space allocated to
it in the general settings. also note that many of them will not
normally be visible in the regular 'view' mode as they are - by default
in hidden mode.
also, be careful, 'cause there are 'other' functions/apps that can
create a file with the .cpy extension, but those aren't in the restore
folder.

Paul, thank you for the information.

Restore is a pretty handy tool. I have used it a few times now to save my
butt. Usually good practice to set a restore point before installing any new
software on the machine. If something goes amiss with the install, or you
get conflicts with other programs after the install, you can easily run the
restore function of windows and it will take you back to a point of
operation as if the problem never existed. Also has worked for me when I
have picked up a virus. Depending on the virus though as I have run into a
couple it didn't help with. If restore is activated it can be set to
automatically set restore points. It can also be deactivated if you don't
wish to have that function. In these days of huge hard drives I think it a
good usage of some space. It keeps previous restore points as long as it can
before rewriting. I can go back a couple of months if I need to, or just
back to yesterday, or just back 5 minutes ago if I have it set that way.
Some software will automatically create a restore point before it installs
itself as a courtesy and safety measure.
