I just started taking methotrexate and my doctor was not specific on how I
should take it.  and neither is the directions on the bottle.  It was take 4
tablets weekly.  Should I take all 4 pills once a week or should I spread
them out over the week?

Usually it means take the tablets at one time, once a week. Be sure and
drink plent of water the day of the dose and the day after. Also, did your
doctor prescribe folic acid. MTX is notorious for leeching that out of your
system. You'll feel better if you take it.

Yup, she has me on 1mg once a day. along with relafin 750mg 2 times a day,
prednisone 5mg a day, percocets 5/325mg when needed, and my regular asthma
medications.  She has me doing blood work every 6 weeks and I'm seeing her
about once a month right now.

Well, take more if you get any odd effects from the MTX like mouth sores or
general nausea or some such.  I find that some extra goes a long way toward
nixing the side efects.  I also find that time makes a lot of difference.
After nearly a year I get very little of these things.  They used to be a
problem.

Can't believe a doctor would not give you precise instructions with MTX.
I've been on  it since 1984 (take 3 pills on Sat. and if I forget for more
than 1 day I am not to take it).  Better check back with doc.  Are you in
the US?  Directions are always on my meds from the Rx.  Good luck.  Jan O'

Mine didn't tell me either so I had to ask.  He said you should not
space them out over 4 days.  I forgot why but he gave me a reason.  He
said all together on the same day.

Hi All,,,   Its to give your liver time to recover before its time to take
it again next week.
Some people split the dose early and late on the same day for stomach
reasons but I never did...  Many years at 17.5 mg to hold my RA at bay,,,
each pill being 2.5 mg.  Many people take Methx on Sat.   It lets them have
a day of feeling kind of washed out before they have to go back to work.   A
person gets used to the blood tests every month or two just checking to see
how the persons liver is doing.
Good luck with it...

Yes that's right.  He said spacing it out was tougher on the liver,
now that you mentioned it.

It doesn't seem to affect me at all or do much good for that matter
but they want to keep me on it because I'm taking Humira.

Speaking of which, I was taking a double dose of Humira (a shot a
week) for three months and started to feel really fine.  Almost got
completely off Prednisone but my RD said something showed up in
studies that said it might not be good for me so back to once every
two weeks and I'm experiencing flares every 2 weeks as well as a hell
of a bad lower back.  If it isn't one thing it's another.

Whoever said that is not up on the practice of using Methx to treat
inflam.arth.   All in one day is the accepted best practice for the most
people that take it.   If the "he" is a doctor,,,,, its time to get another
one.

All at once.  Don't take my word for it though.  Check with your
doctor.
