Can anybody help with some suggestions please?
My wife and I expect to be flying into LAX en route to New Zealand in
January.
We will stay 2 days in LA and then fly out.
We need to find a reasonable 3/4 star hotel not under the flight path,
in a reasonable area and within fairly easy reach of the airport. We
would also like to hire a car (arthritis or replacement hip compatible)
and visit some of the country nearby.
We thought Venice might be OK, but the travel agent says no! We are
currently thinking of Holywood -

tell your silly travel agent to try another vocation. Venice is a
wonderful place to spend an afternoon walking the boardwalk where you
will see every possible permutation of humanity possible 'on
rollerskates' in southern california. maybe a movie star too. cause
plenty have great beach houses to the south of venice. Not that many
actors can afford 'malibu' where all the producers and investment
bankers live. If i were going to avoid a neighborhood it would be
'hollywood' the tourist parts of it are depressing and still sleazy
after all these years. i lived in a great hollywood apt. for a year
while working on a movie in 1987. As much as i enjoyed it i still avoid
the hollyhood and wine area when i visit.
Cant help you with the hotel but any of the web travel sites can with
pics and prices.
You can get the "special needs" car from most of the good rental
agencies/will be a bit pricier but usually very comfortable. I know
avis has seating option vehicles for hip problems.
Have fun. they have a great museum and the LaBrea tar pits have always
been cool.

No help for your specific request, Peter, but a general heads-up for
folks traveling into and out of LAX for the next few months.
They have just last week begun a two-year upgrade project; one of the
first elements is to move and widen one of their two runways that are
capable of handling the larger planes. That part of the work is
expected to last about eight months; airport management *says* they
don't expect serious delays or air traffic problems, but my guess is
that they're overly optimistic. AAR, I think it would be wise to check
the status of airport operations regularly, especially as any planned
travel date comes closer.

Ontario has a very nice mall and is near LA. I usually fly there instead of
LAX.
