I still have to wear my combo thumb/wrist brace overnight despite having y
thumb cleaned out last winter. (can do a lot more during the day, though)
The past few nights I've been waking up with the other fingers really
hurting. I suspect I am clenching my fingers ina fist over the end of the
brace. Hopefully this is just because I've been overdoing things lately to
get ready for local events so the muscles are clenching up at night and I'll
stop doing it soon. But does anyone have a suggestion for how to keep myself
from doing this? As I was trying to get back to sleep last night, I thought
about trying to attach a ball to my hand for my fingers to curl around but
can't figure out how to keep it in place easily. Any (reasonable) ideas will
be entertained! this is affecting my sleep too much.

Maybe an ace bandage?

nann, you just need a straight splint like we have to wear when our
hands flare. Just the straight, vanilla splint that holds the hand and
fingers straight out.
hope it gets better,

How about a rolled-up ace bandage or a small ball inside of a large
sock?

unfortunately, I want something TONIGHT - not that I'm impatient or anything.
LOL It isn't a frequent problem, but when I've been using my hands a lot it
does crop up. I may try Lindy's idea of using an ace wrap to hold something
in place so I can't clench into a fist. sigh.... may give up and buy the
other though. I need to replace the current brace anyway as it's showing its
years of use.

good idea. tonight you should make a simple resting splint with the ace
and something rigid,
I was always able to get sleeping splints from my RD. Personally i
always found it important to get the real thing from a PT... you can do
more long term harm than good if the splint doesnt fit correcty.

well, I surprised myself with my (temporary) solution. Monday night I was so
wiped out that I fell asleep on the couch while trying to work out in my mind
how to do something with the ace wrap. I was half-lying down, half-sitting
up and luckily had my hand resting in a "good" position on my leg. Woke up 3
hours later with the cat sleeping on my tummy. sigh........
Got up, put together the coffee pot for the morning, then walking back
through the living room I spotted my arch sleeves. These are just a loop of
the stuff spiral ankle braces are made of that fits around the arch and pulls
up the plantar fascia. But it looked to be the right size..... yup, pulled
it on my hand over the end of my splint, stuffed a rolled up pair of socks in
it and I had a nice something for my fingers to rest on rather than clenching
up!
Last night it came off in the night so I must not have been clenching as
much. We'll see about tonight. I have my checkup with my PCP in a couple of
weeks so I'll ask about splints for use when needed. Not scheduled for RD
again until Nov.

What is that new 'tape' stuff that sticks to itself. I have built this
board made of a chuck wrapped around a piece of cardboard that is wrist
width. To the end near the fingers, I have a roll of gauze that fits
under the middle knuckles and then I wrap the stick together tape around
and around.
This is used during my Remicade when the only vein they can find is the
one in the lower knuckle on my pointer finger. Moving the finger at all
kills me so holding that straight is the answer and this is the method I
divides. Now I do fall asleep during the infusion but it is not like
sleeping in a bed through the night. I think I would cover this whole
thing with a sock so you are less likely to knock it off during the night.
