Swollen fingers and hands

The past few weeks, the arthritis has gotten into my hands and fingers , and
they have become swollen, especially in the morning.
As the day progresses they are not as swollen but they have not come back to
normalcy.

I am not able to wear my rings and I want to have them enlarged.
Has anyone had this minor (rings not arthritis) problem?  And did you have
your rings enlarged?

Thanks for any input.

I haven't had the ring problem, but you will have to ask a good jeweler
about resizing because some can be and some can't.  I haven't work my FSU
class ring for decades because it can't be, so I'm told.

please tell me that's Ferris State or Fresno State, not Florida State!  I
have enough guilt with being fond of other Seminoles in this group!

I have my original wedding ring and engagement ring on a gold chain.
Yes, I've resized it many times and can't anymore.  But I can wear them
on my neck for special occassions.

The only problem is that people tend to think that they belong to my
mother!

That's crazy. I've had my college ring re-sized numerous times. The
first few times it was free, the last time they charged me. If you
remember who made your ring, contact them and I'm sure they can re-size
it. Mine is a Josten's.

betty,
i had a ring enlarged due to swelling from RA. (on good days, it now
spins around my finger, but most of the time it's just right.) it was
my mother's engagement ring and is about 70 years old and precious to
me. unfortunately, the enlargement has caused some gradual problems
with the very slender gold pieces on each side of the ring. over time
(a year) they snapped from being stretched too thin by the resizing. (i
hope this makes sense. would be much easier if i could show you!)
anyhow, i'd moved since the resizing and the new jeweler said it's not
uncommon for this to happen on old rings in which the gold has been
worn thin. he also said it could not be repaired and that i'd have to
get a new setting. but he added that i'm in no danger of losing the
stones because of it, thus i'm leaving it as is for now, since the
thought of changing the setting my mom wore for 64 years is too sad.
:-(

long answer! but hope it helped,

Betty:  I've had rings resized and there are two ways of doing it.  Some
can be stretched if you are not going up too many sizes and if the
stones are not channel set.  Mine were done that way at first.
When they needed sizing again I had them cut in the back of the shank
and a gold piece added.  This costs more but it does work.
Right now I can't wear any rings again because of the swelling.  I'm
thinking of taking one of them to the jeweler to have a shank put on
that opens and closes, but it really costs a lot of money for this.

Diane:  Years ago, when my Mom's wedding ring wore thin and was in
danger of breaking, she had it reset in a wider gold band.  You could
actually still see the original ring in the middle.  They also suggested
at first that they melt it down and incorporate it into another band but
she didn't want to do that.
She always said she wanted to be buried with her wedding ring on her
finger and it was my privilege to see that was done.  I too have her
diamond engagement ring from 1937 and I treasure it although I can't
wear it.  It's so nice that you are able to wear the one that your Mom
wore.

thanks for that info, ann. when i get ready to have the ring fixed,
i'll look into that option. my siblings, who are otherwise very nice
people, just wanted to sell the ring. glad i could talk them out of it.

My dad had his original wedding ring enlarged more than once, until the
jeweler said it couldn't go any biggerr.  Then he lost it on a canoe trip
(capsized and it got freet of his ditty bag) and my folks got him a new one.
(anyone find a wedding ring on the Wekiva River in Florida?)

Anyway, it can be done, but I wouldn't really recommend it until you are
certain that the swelling is permanent.  Check with your RD about the status
of your joints and meds before you do it.  Shrinking the rings back down is
much more complicated and will reduce the likelihood of being able to stretch
them again in the future.

Thank you, everyone, for all the suggestions and information.
I'm seeing my RD in two weeks and will ask him about the
condition of my fingers.  Do I dare hope the swelling goes down???

You're a great group of people.  I've learned a lot , just lurking.

Yes, you dare to hope, just don't get your heart absolutely set on it.  The
swelling means your disease isn't fully under control.  In days past, there
usually weren't many more options to control it.  That's where Daddy was when
he had to start stretching his wedding ring.  Today though, they have so many
more medications.  There is definite hope of getting the disease under
control, or at the very least under better control so the swelling goes down.

It's the best time in history, thus far, to have these ailments.

That's for durn sure!  This group has really helped me through some difficult
and painful times.

I've had this problem for 10 yrs now.
I had my rings enlarged and the days I'm not swollen, I add a silicone ring
sizer.

My mother has. She has arthritis and scleroderma. She has had to have
her ring resized several times.
