Spent the last week baby-sitting daughter's kitties. That is her two and
my two and John is out of town. The heat flowed in just as he left for
the plane. This rental house has lousy windows and no air conditioner. I
have resorted to wetting down the roof and watching the steam rise. One
fan died and I spent the day trying to find another. There are none. Ran
into my pilates teacher in Target and was able to tell her where not to
look and she promised to call me if she found one at two places I had
not yet tried. Today, she told me that a workman had taken her around to
a tool supply store for contractors and she bought a $90 airKing. I went
over there today and got two smaller ones at $54 a piece and the air is
racing through this house now. It is not really cool air because at the
moment, I have most of the windows shut, but it at least moving it
around. After 7pm I will start opening the windows, and after 9pm when
the sun disappears behind the neighbors pine, I will open the rest. I
think it was two days ago that I had to finally climb out of bed at 1am
and stand in the shower in my nightgown and get back into bed. Haven't
done that since college and trust me, that has been awhile. Somewhere
around 2am the outside temp began to fall.  The last couple of nights
the evening temps are great but it does take a couple hours to cool the
interior down. These fans should help much quicker.
Frankly, I am just sitting and not spending much time near this hot
computer. Don't even feel like reading --- just sitting.
Hope all the rest of you at least have some sort of air conditioning. I
can't imagine the poor folks in San Jose as the power grid collapsed
down there and they don't have any power and haven't for 3-4 days.
lol there won't be much to wash save towels for my three baths a day as
I haven't been wearing much.
Jen came to get her kitties yesterday and was horrified at how hot it
was. I just laughed at her as the temp was at least 15 degrees less. The
day I was looking for the fan, my car said it was 111; the radio said 96
when I first started out but when I was heading home, the car said 117.
I know that just couldn't be right but still... ugh.

Duckie, you have my sympathy.  I need to look for a fan because one day last
week I pulled the chain to turn the overhead fan on high from low, and the
cord pulled completly out!  The lamp by my reading chair adds so much heat
when the overhead fan is just running on low that I get miserable and have
to quit and move.  I keep forgetting to look for a large fan when I'm out so
I can put on the hearth and have it blowing directly on me.  So glad you got
some help in your place.  And so sorry for all the people around the country
without electricity.

Oh  Duckie,

I feel for you and don't know how you are doing it without a/c. Please take
care and be careful.

I am glad you did find some fans.

I have been using the a/c which is kicking out and keeping it still kind of
warm in here, plus the fans, plus water bottles, ice behind the neck, wiping
down with cold wash cloths, showers and whatever else i can find to keep
cool.

I didn't hear about the San Jose power grid. Man that is bad. I feel for all
those that are without power.

In the three counties ours and two around us 25 people have died from this
heat.

I saw yesterday or was it the day before...  that 56 people have died in
CA so far. Lot's of those are in nursing homes which I am guessing were
basic warehouses with not enough care. Makes you think.
I love today though. Hope you got this cool air I have been enjoying.

I read in the paper 85 died in Calif. from this heat. 62 of those are in
counties around us. I believe is what it said.

Also saw on news tonight that SF said more have died than that.

Thousands of cows and animals have died in this area and fruit, veggies, and
nuts are gone also. So watch out for the prices this year of all things.
Milk included.

It was 98 today. Much cooler than the 113 and 115's we have been having.

You must be somewhere near me.  I'm in Fresno.

Squirrely - 28 Jul 2006 16:27 GMT
Yeah in San Joaquin Area.

Have your temps dropped down at all yet. I saw where you are having it worse
than we are. Ours was ranging around 111 - 115 for almost a week.

I heard on the last part of the news last night that there are 90 dead in
Calif from this heat wave. Probably more that they don't know about yet.

Our city is sending out volunteer teams to go check on the trailer parks in
the area to make sure all are ok there. They found one yesterday that was in
bad shape so it was good they started doing that.

We've been around the same as you.  They keep saying "cooling trend" coming
but all I feel is hot.  It's supposed to cool off in the mid to high 90's
starting tomorrow but back up to 102 on Thursday (as well as today).

They've got volunteers here in Fresno too as well as cooling centers around
town for anyone who needs them.  The whole thing is just so unfortunate.  I
really feel for the families who have lost loved ones due to the excessive
heat.

  ~Lindy~
Squirrely - 28 Jul 2006 17:44 GMT
Yeah I know Lindy, I am still hot too but I am blessed just to know that it
is not as bad as it was. It was touch and go there for awhile. I have
dehydration issues and I was getting worried. Our a/c couldn't keep up with
the heat either. Hubby has been working out in this weather and has come
home not looking good. So I was really worried.

I feel for all the families that have lost loved ones too. I also feel for
all those that don't have a/c's, fans, and electric during this heat wave
that is going across the world. It is something else.

It seems to me I heard somewhere that Squirrely wrote in article
<12ckb6h8lml8vbf@corp.supernews.com>:

>Yeah in San Joaquin Area.

The greater San Joaquin Valley area, with about half of the deaths so
far in Fresno County in the middle of the San Joaquin Valley.

(San Joaquin County is north of Fresno, major city Stockton, while San
Joaquin is a small town west of Fresno)

>Have your temps dropped down at all yet. I saw where you are having it worse
>than we are. Ours was ranging around 111 - 115 for almost a week.

Days in that area routinely go to 100+ F. throughout the summer months,
but it was always a dry heat until the massive buildup of population and
suburbs in the past few decades.  Now humidity and smog have been added
into the mix.

>I heard on the last part of the news last night that there are 90 dead in
>Calif from this heat wave. Probably more that they don't know about yet.

The current heat wave has hit throughout California (and at times as far
north as Portland and Seattle), with temps ten, fifteen, or more degrees
above normals.

Thanks Duckie, I sure hope your temps have dropped too. I have been worried
about you since you posted about the heat.

I read in this mornings paper that the death toll is now 139 for Calif. I am
wondering if these are people that were in the hospital and had just been
too bad to begin with or if they are still dropping even though the temps
have gone down.

I know this morning I am weak and shaky big time. Can't figure out what it
is that is doing it. I was like this for a little bit yesterday and found my
blood sugars had dropped but checked this morning and they are fine. So not
sure what is going on now.  Legs don't feel like they want to hold me up.

As a survivor of the intense heat wave so far, what are you being advised to
do to prevent death?  I'll bet taking lots of fluids in is one way.  I read
in our newspaper that things are difficult for the morgues out there with
more people dying and lack of space becoming a problem.  Nanny

Yeah, I saw in todays paper 164 are dead from the heatwave.

It keeps growing as they are still behind from so many dying so quickly.

Yeah fluids, stay in a/c, they opened some cooling centers so people could
go there during the day. Dress cool. Etc. Etc.

Gwen, have you tried replacing the bulb in your reading light with a compact
flourescent?  They really do put out much less heat as they use less energy.
It's been one of my tricks for helping wiht summer heat.  Mike's been
spending so much time playing computer games recently, I finally replaced the
overhead light bulbs in the office with compacts.  On hot days we're cooling
the whole house with one window unit so the office was really heating up
between the lights and the computer.  The bulb change helps.

Come on up north, Cindy!  I am thinking of doing a whale watch cruise
next week and phoned to see if they have openings on the days I wanted
to go. The woman said the whales are very playful and reminded me to
bring a sweatshirt as it gets COLD on the water :-)))

Last night I had to close my sliding door as I was shivering and when I
went to bed I slept under my comforter.

I know what you mean about electricity bills as I always had high ones

I would bet that the landlord is in violation of city and state codes,
UBC, NEC and UFC (Uniform Building Code, National Electrical
Code, and Uniform Fire Code.

Are there any smoke alarms/fire detectors in that rental?

... I don't remember ever being forgetful.
Duckie - 29 Jul 2006 04:29 GMT
Yep Chief - smoke alarm in every bedroom and in the hallways -- plus
they work as we tested them.
There are three prongs in the bathroom and kitchen but no windows which
would hold an air conditioner. Plus you can't use the microwave and the
electric kettle at the same time or it is out the back door across the
lawn and locate the circuit breaker box. Thank heaven for the fences as
I have done that more than once in my nightgown. Can't imagine what
would have to be turned off to use an air conditioner.

Oh Duckie,

I feel for you. I know electrical issues. I keep getting worried because of
so many power surges and the lights dimming when using more than two things
at a time in the house.

Supposedly the electric company says all is fine. But I don't know. I never
lived in a place that did this kind of thing. Also the landlords electrician
says it is all ok too. I don't believe them but what can you do.

So please take care and take it easy during all this. I hope you can soon
get out of there and in a better place.

John's major was electrical engineering and when we looked at the boxes
of air conditioners, he didn't think the wiring would handle things
despite the missing three prong plugs. I did look at one of those that
sort of sat in the room and didn't go into a window but didn't get it
due to cost with him being out of town and not sure that it would even
run without overheating the wiring somehow. Best to leave that to
someone who knows what he is doing. sigh...  Both times he has been out
of town, it has gone over 100. I think he doesn't believe me. ;)

Unusual for the UK, but it has been hot here as well. The temp in my

country has been 36.6 C. It is still hot and humid, but will probably
all collapse in thunderstorms soon.

Oh, Duckie, how I feel for you!  and for the cats, too, now that I think of
it - not the weather for fur coats!  Are your windows the kind that won't
allow a window a/c?  It's amazing how much just one can do when supplemented
with fans.  Or maybe one of those portable units that don't need a window?
They cost more, but I've even seen them in WalMart recently.

My trick when there are no options for cool air at home are to hit the malls
and/or libraries.  Heck, these days there's a lot you can do at the libraries
- get online as well as read and nap.  Wonderful places.

I feel for the folks in San Jose - I remember what it was like when the
hurricane-felled tree took out the power at my mom's house, but at least we
could go out to dinner somewhere to cool off in the early evening before
bedtime.  We have seen some battery powered fans on the market since then -
not very powerful, but better than nothing.

Hi duckie,

Having spent most of my life without air conditioning I will offer a tip or
two to help with the heat.
When we were kids we had a musty basement we could spend time in, still like
that musty smell for some reason.
Haven't had a basement for many years though.
Tip 1: Get out of the heat!!! :-) just kidding....
Tip 1a: we used to take dish towels (for drying dishes) and soak them in
water. Squeeze out water and lay flat in freezer 'till frozen.
Take one out and tent is over your head. Amazing. When it thaws, rotate it
with another and freeze the first again.
Tip 1b: When I lived at the lake and it got very hot out, I used to sit on
the pier and soak my feet in the cool water. Helped alot. So after I moved
I would take a bucket of cold water and soak my feet in it. That with having
a towel tent over my head made me look ridiculous, but worked quite well.
Now I'm willing to pay for ac in the summer, but only when the temps get
into the 90's.
Have to pay heating in winter, so that same money goes to cool in the
summer.

I know I am not duckie, but I am an animal. ;-)

Good ideas Gary. I didn't think of them.

I was using squirt bottle and squirting myself down and having fan on me.
Also wetting hair and letting it dry that way.

I used wet washcloth and put one in frig  in baggie. When the one I was
using to wipe down with got warmer, I would change it out. So kind of the
same idea as your dishtowel thingy.

Learning to work with blinds, windows open to get cooler air in and then
close and back and forth does play you out though. I am talking about now,
since we are down to 98 instead of 111 -115.

Playing with the a/c alot too. Finding the correct time to turn it up so it
can recycle the freeone, etc is a new experience too. I didn't know you
couldn't turn it on and just let it go. ;-)

Lots of cold showers help too.

Why can't you leave your a/c on?  Ours stays on all the time.

Just wondering

I'm suspecting it's because her a/c is so overworked in the recent heat.  If
it never manages to get the house down to the target temp tahnks to the
outside heat, than the a/c never shuts down and it can freeze up and stop
working altogether.  That's based on car experience though, so I won't swear
to it.

but does it shut down at all when running it. If you let it run without shut
down time (when it reaches a certain temp. say it stops running at 78 then
comes back on by itself then that is the right way) if not then it doesn't
give the freeon time to get thru the a/c and it will eventually freeze up
and quit completely.

I start mine out at bringing the temp down to 70. That will bring my temp in
the house down to 75. Then I turn the thermostat up to 75. It shuts down and
then comes on when it is hotter than 75. Then as the day goes on I turn it a
hair up to stop it from cooling too much without stopping.

I cant keep my thermostat higher than about 78 because of my dehydration
problems. I wish I could but can't. I can't take the heat at all. With all
the chronic issues I have I would go into heat stroke before you know it.

The a/c guy said if it is running continually without shutting down by
itself during the day, it will overheat and quit because of not getting the
freeon recycling thru it to keep it running cooler on the unit. That is all
I know about it. Since I have started doing that, it seems to keep things
cooler than before.

Hi SJ,,,,,  You seem to have a good way to control what is going on.   If
you live in a very humid area,,,, it will stop cooling because the coil is
iced up not because it gets too hot.   If the air is dry and you are trying
to cool too large an area,,, it could over heat.  In that case, some parts
of the house are going to have to get hot so that you can live without a
stroke,,,,,, that is serious and many people die from getting over heated
each day in the summer time.
I am sorry to say that the sun for the last couple of years has been
over active and we are paying the price today and tomorrow.   All the
satellites and our brave people in the space station are in peril.   There
are people that think (bad spelling) the comet Halebop and its satellite are
in a tight spiral around the sun causing the expanding of the sun or at
least changing the ele. field of the sun.   This is not something for you
and I to worry about because there is nothing we can do about it other than
like you,,, do the best we can with what we have and ride it out.
I think you are very smart in your attitude toward taking care of
yourself.   A lot of people are going to die that think it is not something
to worry about and are too active in the heat of the day.

You might want to ignore those people in the future, as they clearly
don't know what they're talking about.  Comet Hale-Bopp is speeding away
from the Sun, already further away than Saturn, and it's not expected to
return in the next couple thousand years.

Well, we can't affect the Sun's activity, of course.  Anyway, as far as
I know, the possibility hasn't been ruled out beyond reasonable doubt
that our greenhouse gas emissions _may_ contribute significantly to
global warming.  If they do, then there is something we can and must do
to avoid dangerously hot weather from becoming more and more common in
the future.

I agree.

Thank you for your reply.    There was this photograph put on the net by one
of the big scopes in Hawaii that showed something in a tight orbit of the
sun.    It was withdrawn from the net.   It is good to know that comet is on
its way out of the system for awhile.  I wonder what was caught on that
plate?
Aaah, yes,,,, the greenhouse effect.   Someone should put a cork in the
volcanoes around the world,,, Problem solved.   I worry more about the
damage being done the oxygen making green stuff in the ocean which makes
most of what we breath even if the rain forest was completely gone.   We
need to take care of the oceans that take care of us.   Aaaah well,,,
everyone can do their part.   My car gets 34 miles to the gallon,,,, how
about yours?

I understand about the heat. Yesterday it was 102 here. It really sucked
cuz there is a stationary front just hanging around, and strong fronts
play havoc with my arthritis. I'm sitting here in a lot of pain in
almost every joint of my body.
Duckie - 31 Jul 2006 21:38 GMT
Fronts play havoc with my mother too. Not so much with me anymore since
finding a set of good working DMARDS
BTW everyone -- my mother's orthopedic guy is sending her to her second
in her life RD. First one was an a.s and she never went back and that
was multiple joints ago. We shall see. At 87 and with a heart condition
now -- not sure there is much they will do or want to do.
