I went to the Rheumotologist on Thursday. She sent me for Blood testing
again, ANA, Comp Chem panel, Sedimentation Rate, RF, and a few others. I
have to have a PPD done on Monday. She also sent me for Xrays, 3 on each
hand, wrist and feet, 2 on each elbow and knees. in the meantime she put me
on Prednisone for 3 weeks and dolobid. My ins will not pay for the dolobid
and I have called her to let her know this. I can't afford to pay for the
Dolobid out of pocket either they want $90 for 60 pills and she wrote the
prescribtion for 90 pills so I'm thinking that is well over $100 or more. I
go back to see my primary on monday as well so hopefully he will prescribe
me something different as well.
She said I am still generally swollen on both sides and have something
called Polyarticular arthritis at this point. I guess she isn't totally
sure of what type it is. At least I do know at this point it is Autoimmune.

Hi Jennifer,,,,, The above story is part of our times. I would ask my RD
for a substitute prescription or if it is important if I take this. Come
to think of it,,,, more than once I have asked my PCP and/or RD for samples.
If the prednisone helps you , the chances are that you are correct in
that you have some form of inflam.arth.... DMARDS are expensive and the
chances also are that you are going to have to battle your insurance. Keep
your RD informed about what takes place there are ways to get help with
cost.

I went back to see the RD today and talked to the nurse. She is trying to
get authorization for the dolobid through the insurance company. i should
know on wednesday what is going on more.

hi jennifer,
it sounds like you've found a good RD. polyarticular just means there
are at least several joints involved, so you have definitely joined our
club--lucky you. i hope your doc gets you on treatment that helps you
quickly.

So you know diane she is actually new at the practice that I am going to and
she has just became an RD about a year ago and just finished her residency.
So I hope that she is going to be great. I'm actually glad that I found
someone who is very understanding of it all. She was very gentle when
touching where my joints are and everything so I hope everything works out
great.

Jennifer,
I'm a little surprised that Dolobid is that pricy. I think it's been around
long enough that it should be generic. I guess it was '88 that I tried it,
so that would be 18 years ago. Hmmmm, maybe it's in the last years of the
patent so they're milking it while they can - either that or they must have a
new formulation that renewed the patent.
Anyway, you did the right thing letting your RD know. She may be able to
sample you for now and talk your insurance company into paying, or she may be
able to get you on something your insurance will cover.
It sounds like your RD is doing all the right things to evvaluate what is
going on and is doing a thorough job. That is the good news. A good RD is a
valuable partner. Hopefully your insurance compnay will be more co-operative
when you have a more definite diagnosis. Sometimes they kick up their heels
at general tags like "Polyarticular arthritis". It's sad and a big hassle,
but it is the reality. Hang in there though. Your RD is at work nailing
down what is plaguing you.

Went and saw her today and well she gave me a prescription for relifen and
guess what, the ins won't even cover that. My Vit D is very low and she
gave me a prescription for that as well and guess what the ins won't cover
that either. I don't know what I'm going to do but I'm at wits end. I'm
about ready to give up and say hell with it and wither away. In august she
wants to put me on Methotrexate I wonder if the ins will cover that.

Can you not buy Vitamin D OTC? I do, get it in 1,000 IU pills, can't remember
exactly what I pay but it is not expensive.

Wow, that's a lot. I was taking 2,000 I.U. during the winter but cut back to
1,000 during the summer. Research is showing much larger amounts can be taken.
I've never had a level done. There's a lot of talk about low Vitamin D and MS
which is the reason I take it, but I don't know if it helps if you already have
MS.

I don't know either Joan. The medical community doesn't seem to agree.

it sounds like your insurance comapny needs a slap upside the head! find out
what their appeals process is and kick it in - though having your RD's office
argue with them about necessary meds is one starting point. mary Z could
give you lots of tips on arguing with insurance companies, but she's off
paddling right now. On the plus side, methotrexate (mtx) is cheap even if
you have to pay for it. When I was taking 20 mg weekly in pill form it cost
me about $30/month. I hear the injectable form is cheaper.

Jennifer: I was on 10,000 units Vit. D. three times per week and
insurance refused it at first. The doctor signed a form and insurance
reconsidered.
Now I am on a heavier dose, 1 mcg per day and so far the doctor has
given me samples. Try for a reconsideration from your insurance on this
one. As I understand it, they won't cover vitamins that are for regular
maintenance, but will cove them for specific medical needs.

My rheumy recommended OS-CAL calcium 500mg with Vitamin D 200 I.U.
I purchase a bottle of 250 (about 4 months) for $14.29 at Costco.

My bottle of 1-A-Day and the bottle of calcium with D 200 I.U.
both state the daily value of vitamin D is 400 I.U.
The dosage for the calcium with D is "One With Breakfast/
One With Dinner."
I take one 1-A-Day and 2 calcium with D, which gives me 800.
