With all the numbers I tried, the resulting answer was a multiple of 9.
So when I subtracted I got either 9, 18, 27, 36, etc. And the symbols
for all multiples of 9 are the same :-)

plus, each time you do it, the symbols change so that all the ones
divisible (sp?) by 9 are the same, but they're different than they were
the time before.

Something I learned in parochial school in the 4th or 5th grade.

It works on the "casting out 9's" principle. in the puzzle, your
answer
is always 9 or a multiple of 9, i.e. 9...18...27...36....
