My sister just called after picking up her grand-daughter (Abby) who
will be spending the next few days with her. Abby has just had a
pediatrician's visit and they suspect JRA. She is 8 now. Her Dad (my
nephew) was killed in the car accident in 2001. I guess her Mom and
new husband were in tears when they heard the news.

I am not sure what her symptoms are or how many tests she has had.
Jody (her mom) has lupus, and we have autoimmune diseases of all sorts
in our family.

Althoough I am really sad about this, part of me is being cautiously
optimistic and hopes that it will be something else. I hope that I am
not just in denial. It's just that I can not bear the thought of her
having this.

My eldest sister is continuing her battle with the infection following
her tkr. She had the surgery in September, and since then has been
fighting infection. Now she has seen a new surgeon and he will be
taking the prosthesis out, putting in a dummy prosthesis that has
antibiotic in it, and then redoing the tkr in a few months. In spite
of the fact that she is facing two more surgeries, she is hopeful that
the infection will be cleared once and for all.

Rose, pray your optimism will pay off for Abby, and she will have something
other than JRA which can be healed.  The lupus and other autoimmune diseases
in the family though, make you wonder.
It is hard to believe that your sister is still dealing with infections from
the TKR; she probably wishes she had never had it done.  Pray this new
surgeon will be able to do everything right.

I have my fingers crossed for your sister and for Abby.  It least it sounds
like your sister's new surgeon has a handle on what to do and she might
finally feel better after so long.  And maybe Abby will have something else,
but if it is JRA, they are getting on it early and the treatments just keep
improving.  Her path will be easier than yours has been.

Oh, and I'm throwing in a few prayers for each of them too.....
