Kelly C. - 03 Jul 2006 05:15 GMT Hello everybody! We had occasion to try out the VNS tonight. This is a good thing and a bad thing, of course. But mainly good, because it WORKED!! Gah!
Rach bonked herself on the head (which happens more often than you would think), and I grabbed the magnet and ran it over the VNS, through her shirt. The seizure went on, but she never lost conciousness. Just as I was starting to think it didn't work, Rach grabbed the magnet and swiped herself! She immediately brightened and was herself within seconds.:D
I shook all over for about 5 minutes, then called Brett. Now I'm wondering if I missed on the first swipe, or if maybe it slowed things down enough that Rach was able take over from there. I don't know, but I do know she recovered quicker than from any other seizure of this type.
I just had to share our joy, Kelly C.
Squirrely - 03 Jul 2006 05:32 GMT Oh glad to hear it worked Kelly.
It might have just taken two swipes to do it too maybe.

I just got her tucked up in bed, but she's too excited to sleep yet, so she's reading.
I've been following along here, and reading about all the stuff you've got going on lately. I'm sorry things are so hard right now, but glad to hear about the unexpected cash. I hope that's a sign of more good things to come.
Hugs, Kelly C.

I can imagine it will take her awhile to wind down and you too. But it is so great it did the job.

no wonder she's excited. having something that really helps and works has to make rach feel at least a little bit in control of her situation, that up until now must have made her feel like she had little or no control over. less of that kind of feeling of helplessness and more of that feeling of empowerment must feel pretty good to our rach. that's powerfully exciting. way to go, mom!---all your loving effort is paying off. and that's wonderful.
((((((((((((((((happy hugs for you and rach)))))))))))))))))))

In Rachel's case, what a blessing to be born within the last 20 years. The first VNS was implanted in 1988. This is _new_ science, and it's amazing!

Kelly - 04 Jul 2006 03:28 GMT I talked to Diane Witt today Kelly and she said how glad she was this was working for Rachel. Medicine has come a long way. How wonderful that she has even some control or feels she does - control over these diseases means everything.
So glad things are going a little better Kelly.
Kelly in Victoria.

I know there are a lot of people here who wish us well, and have been praying, lighting candles, and sending out healing vibes on our behalf. We are so grateful for everything our friends have done for us.
Please keep us in your prayers. This is just the beginning of a long road of adjustments and pitfalls.

Is this only for grand mal seizures, her seizures are slightly less but close to grand mal. -- MZ

The device seems to work best for people with a defined aura.
Maybe this is something that would help you niece.:)

She would just blank out for a second. Now there are far less seizures but they are worse and last longer ( I am not sure what they are called). She is in Australia with an Aunt and they took her to a neurologist, the Dr in Oz felt she had stronger seizures and they were not well controlled. They increased the meds and made her into a zombie, you know how that goes. So they are still trying things to see what might work better. I will mention this to my brother I am not sure if she has a defined aura. thanks for the info. -- MZ
