Talked to Diane yesterday.  She can walk 50 feet with her walker but still
can't stand on her own.  Needs to be able to stand.  She can transfer from
wheelchair to bed with a transfer board.  She is doing 4 iv antibiotics a
day though and that is taking time away from rehab.  The frustration is kind
of getting her I think.  Her husband got her a portable dvd player though
and that is helping.

So keep her in your thoughts.  It is a week by week thing with the rehab and
her insurance company.  So far she is winning.

condition in the first place?

After her mom died and actually before then as well she got a couple of
infections and started having trouble with her MS.  She started relying more
on her wheelchair and was not doing probably enough strengthening exercises
(hard when the ms is flaring)  It got to the point the infections were not
responding to the antibiotics, the process was making her weaker, the ms was
getting worse and she was off and on the enbrel so the RA wasn't much
better.  She then learnt that the spine was crumbling with the osteo caused
by the high steroids over the year.  All this landed her in the hospital
unable to stand or walk with some of her bodily functions no longer working
properly.  Has been a long haul back and will be longer.  She is in rehab
now but back on iv again for the urinary infections.

I think her mom's death and the aftermath funerals etc was the final straw
that broke the camel's back so to speak.  The body can only handle so much
and she was putting a lot on the back burner.

Kelly,

Thanks so much for keeping us up to date on Diane W. when you yourself
are going through such rough times.

I have to tell you, that you and Diane W. are both truly amazing
arthrits warriors!!!

You both are dealing with such difficult and challenging health
situations and yet you both remain so upbeat and positve.  A real
inspiration to us all and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for
your willingness to share with us and to allow us to learn right along
with you!!!

You both are in my prayers and thoughts, and I really wish there was
something I could say or do to help the both of you find improvements in
your health statuses, but I can't, and that saddens me a great deal.  I
sincerely hope you both know that you both are loved, respected, prayed
for, and wished the very best of everything!!!

Blessings to you both!!!

thanks so much Donna - we have so many friends here to help us along the
way.  She is doing well but got quite down this weekend - a meltdown.  We
talked for I think a couple of hours tonight.  Must have been almost that
amount of time.  We went over some ideas on what she needs to do to get home
and what needs to be prepared.  I think it wasn't quite so overwhelming when
broken down.  I know I don't feel quite so bad when I know I can do it in
small doses.  She is going home for 3 hours on Wednesday and the cat scan
yesterday came out clean - the perforation of the intestine ????(can't think
right now) has healed which is great!  She is now off one of the
antibiotics.  She still has to be able to stand to go home so that is the
next goal.  Standing seems to be a big goal to overcome especially with the
ms symptoms and the RA symptoms creeping up combined with the lack of
strength.  She will get there.

Thanks for the prayers and thoughts we are getting there and your support
helps.  I am doing fine - learning to take naps, get lots of sleep at night,
doing physio for the RA, doing accupuncture for the ms and the ra and that
seems to be working.  I am using the walker more around the house and we
actually have two people coming through the house tomorrow - hopefully it
will sell this month and we can get a one level - ours is only sort of a one
level - there are 4 steps to get in and 2 steps into the living room (which
sometimes could be 13), a upstairs I never go into(don't really need to) but
6 stairs into my garden.  I went into the garden yesterday the long way
around with my walker but let my husband and guests carry dinner and plates
etc. up and down from the house.  Actually didn't feel guilty that they had
done all the work.  My father in law and mother in law and I sat and let
them do all the work.  The only difference is they could do the steps at the
end of the night (86 & 91 years old) and I couldn't.  I took my walker the
long way into the house again.  It was a nice dinner party though.

Thanks again - If you post to the newsgroup for Wednesday morning or to
Diane's email address she will finally get any good wishes direct to her.

"So keep her in your thoughts.  It is a week by week thing with the rehab

I've got my cheer leading outfit on* and am rooting for Diane to come out
victorious in everything.  She is still in my thoughts, as are you, Kelly.
Thanks for the update.

luv&stuff,
Denise

*Not really - I try not to scare the people I live with, as I kind of need
them around. ;)
Now, some of the neighbors, on the other hand...LOL

Thanks Denise - we need that cheerleading outfit sometimes.  Diane phoned
today - had a bad weekend and needed boosting up.  We seem to do that for
each other.  Puts things into perspective.  She gets to come home for a 3
hour window on Wednesday so is going to immediately check her email.  I know
she would love an email if anyone has time to drop it into her box - she is
going to check the newsgroup too.  I am terrible at keeping her in touch
with what is happening.

Thanks again Denise,
Kelly

I am glad to hear she is still making progress. I hope it speeds up for her
very soon.

Whoa that is a lot of antib's at one time. I hope this takes care of it all.

I am sorry to hear she has another urinary infection too. This must be quite
concerning to her since her mom went thru so much of that kind of thing too.

Still have her in my prayers and thoughts.

It's me!  I'm home on a 6 hour pass and have just read this thread.
I've got to tell you....I don't what I would have done this past few
months without Kelly to listen to me when I'm down and be my personal
cheerleader. I can always count on her to tell me just what I need to
hear even if it's not what I THINK I need.  That two hours on the phone
with her the other night was golden. It helped me deal with my fears of
coming home before I'm standing. I have a hard time dealing with that
thought. Al, my PT, says that  based on the fact that I can walk with a
walker and someone beside me, and that I can stand up with assistance,
he doesn't see any reason why I won't eventually get there., It's just
going to take time. I really have come a long ways in the past month.
Getting my butt up the first few feet is a killer but from there on I
can stand myself up.

For those of you wondering what got me here, check out a new post I've
started.  Thanks again for all the prayers and good wishes.

Cyberhugs,
DianeW

That is just the definitition of friendship.  Boy did Rose ever help me out
at the start of this - couldn't have done it without her and drdr to lead me
along the way.  it was like a dark corridory without at door.  And you
helped me as much as I helped you.  Now the second stage - getting you home
and standing!  you might need one of the chairs that lifts for relaxing and
scrapbooking though!

Just wish we were a tiny bit closer.  BC to Florida is a little distance
away and when I go to phone the 3 hour difference is often in the way.
