Saw the new RD again. Talk about a changed attitude! Last time he tried to
tell me it was all fibro. Now that he's gotten all the test results back, he
was very compassionate - said I have confirmed Sjogren's as well as some
form of inflammatory arthritis. He tried to pin it to psoriatic (because of
the sun rash on my arms) but since I had no rash on my head and had already
seen a dermatologist who ruled it out, we couldn't do that. We're still
searching for which arthritis. He did a very specific, very sensitive blood
test for RA, but that was negative. Of course, that doesn't rule out
sero-negative RA.
He has given me lidocaine patches - with a lot of refills. He said I was to
use them for spot pain, i.e., my neck or lower back or shoulder, etc. He
also refilled my ultram - with a gazillion refills. When I said I hoarded
them and only took them two or three times a week he said no, that was not
effective pain control. I am now to take one every night and can take two a
day as needed. He said for me not to sit in pain when there were effective
countermeasures. Gee, I like him! :-P

:-) I think you have found a good doctor that will find the right answers
to what you have and what to do about it. Pain relief is not the full
answer but it is a good start.

It sounds as if he really is a keeper. In my opinion, any good doctor
believes in pain control, and this one does. He will also keep looking for
what you really have; a very good thing.

well, I'm glad he turned into a keeper, but I still have a problem with docs
who change their tune based on lab results - that's me though, because my
labs rarely reflect what the docs see in my joints. Aren't our bodies
peculiar things, the way they do or don't show the effects of these
illnesses?
I agree with him about the Ultram. I've learned that if I don't take it as I
need then the pain gets more out of control and I have to take it MORE often
to calm things down enough to be somewhat productive. As a rule I take one
ultram and one XS acetaminophen 3x/day and kick it up to 4X when I have to.
I'd love a gazillion refills. I get about 4 months worth called in each
time, then I have to call the doc for more. Never had any trouble getting
more, it's just a hassle.
Glad you have a keeper, esp. one who believes in the pain of fibro!

Good deal a keeper finally! When you are one of those pesky sero
negative types sometimes the Drs will dismiss your complaints. -- MZ

I agree - the sero negative garbage really mucks stuff up.
Glad he sounds good,

DeeTee,
Hooray for you!!!
No one took me seriously either. I did get a fibro diag long before the
arthritis dx. Took three rheummies to get the correct dx.
I think one of the problems with me is that my sed rate was very rarely
elevated. This is not unusual with AS, however, it made things very
difficult. By the time the MRIs showed problems with my wrists and
lower back, erosions had already occurred. My rheummy at the time
aplogized, gave me cortisone shots in both wrists and upped my
unbelievable lame 20 ultram script to 180.
I have found that tramadol, for me, works better if I take it at the
first sign of pain. IF I wait too long (which I did all the time at
first) it didn't work as well, nor did it last as long.
I hope they can narrow down the dx for you, and that they adequately
take care of your pain in the meantime.

Char, my RD said to take my tramadol daily, not to wait for pain to take it.
