Dear Folks,

I know that we have discussed this before but I thought that I'd bring
it up one more time.  I have RA, OA, and bone spurs in my neck.
Previously I have told my rheumy that I would not consider surgery and
still don't want to.  Beginning about two monthes ago, I noticed a
marked increase in pain.  The pain highlights right where the skull
joins the neck, neck, tips of the shoulders, collar bone, and across
the shoulders.  I'm very aware of my neck when I lay down.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

TIA,

Vickie B.

Ah vickie sounds like a pinched nerve but then I am no doctor.  Is that what
the surgeon wants to fix??

Did he try Physical therapy with you first?  If not ask him to send you and
see how that goes.  Are you having numbness in the hands or neck itself?

I had a cervical fusion done and I got to say, the pain was so bad I could
not turn my head BEFORE the surgery.  Since then 99 well it was instant
relief. Now arthritis has set in above and below that fusion but it is more
tolerable than the pain before. If that was possible.  I am getting
injections in that area now to relieve head aches.

Did you doc suggest injections?

YOU need to ask MORE questions of your doctor and is he a neurosurgeon?

Dear Janers,

No, I was talking with my rheumy.  I refused the referral to a surgeon.
I'd like to try just about anything else first.

Thanks,

Vickie B.

Go to the surgeon for a consult if you can.  I felt the same way until they
assured me it's JUST a consult, not surgery scheduling or anything like that.

I was referred to one twice, and both times told that surgery isn't an option
at this time.  However, he was really good in helping me deal with my neck
problems (i have cervical OA and a pinched nerve) and was good with
instructing me in some exercises and other things, explaining the
conditions to me and referred me to physical therapy.

Vickie,

I have the same pain.  I get cortisone shots in the base of my neck.
Two on each side one a little higher than the other.  This helps for
months at a time.  The pain doesn't go away completely, but it helps a
whole lot.  My PCP gives them to me.  See if you can find out if this
would help you.

Dear Debbie,

I don't take cortisone.  It causes me to swell and turns hard.

But thanks,

Vickie, I had injections in both sides of my neck, but my pain was mostly in
my neck.
