thumb surgery

I'm scheduled for thumb CMC excision surgery in a couple of weeks. I've
been getting cortisone shots in my thumb joints for about 4 years, and
now I know I need to have a more permanent solution to the
pain/swelling/cracking and ligament stretching. Eerything I enjoy doing
is with my hands! My orthopedic doc is planning to remove the
trapezium(?) and detach a ligament from my wrist which he will use to
wind around and through my thumb bone. I don't think he puts rolled up
ligament in the space between as some surgeries show. I noticed that
several group members had similar surgery in the past, and I wonder how
they are doing now? Would they recommend an amount of time to wait
between surgeries for each hand? I'm having the right done first, as
it's worse. I'm right handed, so that shouldn't be too bad. How is it
having the dominant hand done? How long would you say it will be before
I can play piano, type, garden, etc.? I just turned 50 and wondered the
ages you were when you had this procedure done? Did anyone have a
problem with nerve damage? I understand that that's a risk. I really
would appreciate any input from the group as I embark on this since I'm
pretty anxious about it. Did anyone do it with a block instead of being
put totally to sleep? Please let me hear from you if you have any
experience with this.

Lisa,

I had an osteophite (sp?) removed a couple of years ago at the age of
50 from my right thumb.  It went well and healed quickly.  There was a
little nerve damage around the area they cut on.  It is back to normal
now.  It took about a year for it to feel normal.  Good luck with your
surgery.  It sounds like it's a little more detailed than mine.

Lisa, I had the basal joint on left thumb removed and replaced with a tendon
from my left wrist.  I was put completely to sleep and it healed
beautifully.  Was in PT for a few weeks, but only once a week with exercises
to do at home.

Hi, Ladylove77,
I'm very relieved to hear of your experience with thumb surgery. I
should heal well and I am a very obedient patient as far as following
recommended pt and precautions goes.  I will report back after surgery
and tell the group how it went. Maybe I'll be starting up my normal
activities and work in a month or two?
Thanks for sharing that.

Lisa, let us know when the surgery is going to be; our Prayers on this
newsgroup are really effective.

Well, ladylove77, tomorrow is my thumb surgery. It will be
reconstruction of the joint with  the trapezium removed and replaced
with rolled up tendon from my forearm. I'm thinking I'll go to work on
Monday testing kids, but perhaps I'm too optimistic?

I was in touch with Jody, in Canada, about her April surgery
experience. She even let me see what her scar looks like after 10
weeks. I felt more comfortable after hearing from her.

Anyway, you say the group has effective Prayers! Hopefully you can send
a few my way for tomorrow morning. I'll update afterwards in case
anyone else is planning to have the same surgery.

Thanks fro thinking of me.
