LOLOL,,,, time for a little truth here. In 99.999% of the churches,,, its
the pastor that calls all the shots on what is sung so that it best matches
what is being said.
That does not mean that everyone gets along. People will be people and
every now and then someone will forget the reason people walk in the door on
Sunday. People forget the reason the choir usually wear robes and usually
not much jewelry is worn. Nothing is done to distract a person from the
service.
I do believe the biggest mess I ever got into was over a fellow over in
the tenors that fell asleep every Sunday. When it was noticed that people
were watching to see when he would drop his music or a book or start to lean
over to one side pretty bad it had to be stopped.... IMO,,,, it does not
take much to make people think about something else. So it goes.

well, not in the Episcopal church and I think not in most liturgical
churches. We have a set lectionary - if you follow the daily readings you
cover the Bible every 3 years. The high points are assigned to Sundays. (No
"begats" on Sunday!) Generally the person who plays/directs the music
chooses the music based on the lectionary for that Sunday. Once in a while
you get a control freak priest or a clueless music chooser so that changes,
but that's the standard.

LOL! It's hard for a preacher to compete with a distraction like that!

Pretty much the same here, Nann, United Church of Canada.
