I purchased Zone Alarm last week and downloaded off the internet (waiting to
receive the CD in the mail).  We were away for a few days and came home to a
box at the bottom of my screen (about 1" x 3") that says "AVG E-mail
Scanner".  I just cannot get rid of it and don't know enough to discover the
answer.  As soon as I try and drag it somewhere (it can be moved) it pops
right back up.  Appreciate any ideas.  Thanks.  Jan O'

That is part of AVG anti virus programme  not zone alarm firewall.

What operating system are you using?

assuming windoze xp,  try holding down control key alt key and delete
key [all at once] this will bring on screen tak manager and show tasks
currently running. you should beable to find AVG in something like
"avgcc.exe" click on end process and see if that clears it.
Then restart your computer to safely load zonealarm and AVG.

Let me know if that works.

Well aren't you smart!  Thanks a bunch--that miserable little box is gone.
I've used computers for quite a while and there is still so much I do not
know--never been into "avgcc.exe" before.  I printed your note for my help
file.

No problems, as long as you restarted your machine and are now surfing
safely with a fire wall and antivirus programmes working OK.

From little old me here in the UK with my RA, to arthritis sufferers
on that side of the pond, that's what this group is about "support" in
all forms.

I learnt a lot about that, from a fella that is sadly no longer with
us [but no doubt looking down from his bar in Heaven and laughing],
Larry [b bay Larry], and I'm just glad to carry on his example.

Is there a way I can actually see if the firewall and anti-virus is working?
Where are you in the UK?  We have traveled there a bit.  Thanks for the
help.  Jan O'

Bottom right hand corner of the screen, next to the clock. Zone alarm
= red and yellow icon with ZA on it [turns red/green when working].
AVG = Yellow, Black, Green, Red square icon.

If both are there you should be OK.

I know of two places to test your pc

http://www.grc.com/default.htm

scroll down to "shield up " click  it
then click  "proceed" then pick " file sharing " for your 1st test

This is how my pc tested

Attempting connection to your computer. . .
Shields UP! is now attempting to contact the Hidden Internet Server within
your PC. It is likely that no one has told you that your own personal
computer may now be functioning as an Internet Server with neither your
knowledge nor your permission. And that it may be serving up all or many of
your personal files for reading, writing, modification and even deletion by
anyone, anywhere, on the Internet!
Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist!
One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL STEALTH MODE!
Standard Internet behavior requires port connection attempts to be answered
with a success or refusal response. Therefore, only an attempt to connect to
a nonexistent computer results in no response of either kind. But YOUR
computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which
represents advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities. A machine
configured in this fashion is well hardened to Internet NetBIOS attack and
intrusion.
Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.
All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is
very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to
vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY
SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking
protocol over the Internet.

good free info and other stuff here so look around .

2nd site

http://www.pcflank.com/about.htm

This is how my pc scan on one test ...

TCP CONNECT scanning (scanned in 73 seconds)

We have scanned your computer' ports used by the most widespread trojan
horses. Here is the description of possible ports' statuses:

"Stealthed" (by a firewall) -Means that your computer is invisible to others
on the Internet and protected by a firewall or other similar software;
"Closed" (non-stealthed) - means that this port is closed, but your computer
is visible to others on the Internet that can be potentially dangerous;
"Open" - Means that this port is ready to establish (or has already
established) a connection with remote address. It also means that your
computer is vulnerable to attacks and could have been already hacked or
infected by a trojan/backdoor;
     Port:         Status            Service            Description
21          stealthed            FTP            File Transfer Protocol is used to
     transfer files between computers
23          stealthed            TELNET            Telnet is used to remotely create a
     shell (dos prompt)
80          stealthed            HTTP            HTTP web services publish web pages
135          stealthed            RPC            Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is used in
client/server applications based on MS Windows operating systems
137          stealthed            NETBIOS Name Service            NetBios is used to
share files through your Network Neighborhood
138          stealthed            NETBIOS Datagram Service            NetBios is used to
share files through your Network Neighborhood
139          stealthed            NETBIOS Session Service            NetBios is used to
share files through your Network Neighborhood
1080          stealthed            SOCKS PROXY            Socks Proxy is an internet
     proxy service
1243          stealthed            SubSeven            SubSeven is one of the most
     widespread trojans
3128          stealthed            Masters Paradise and RingZero            Trojan
     horses
12345          stealthed            NetBus            NetBus is one of the most
     widespread trojans
12348          stealthed            BioNet            BioNet is one of the most
     widespread trojan
27374          stealthed            SubSeven            SubSeven is one of the most
     widespread trojans
31337          stealthed            Back Orifice            Back Orifice is one of the
     most widespread trojans

Recommendation:

All the ports we have scanned are Stealthed (by a firewall). So just
continue following the fundamental security measures and regularly update
your security software.

good free stuff here to !

my pc =   Outpost firewall ( with all the neat plug ins ), avg anti virus,
spybot search & destroy and no  "Rootkits " on this pc to  bypass
firewall.

hope this  helps
