About 14 months ago i started to have pain and stiffness in my index finger
of my right hand. At first it wasn't that bad and I was still able to
function normally but now it has gotten alot worse. I can't even bend that
finger all the way anymore. It is so stiff that I am in constant pain. I'm
unable to open lids or coke cans. Somedays I feel like I would be better off
if I didnt have the finger at all. I have been to all kinds of doctors trying
to find out what is wrong and none of them can figure it out. I have had
steroid injections 2 times and they did NOTHING for me. I have also tried
oral steroids and not relief. All that I seem to hear from doctors is that im
too young to have arthritis. I know that isn't true.... alot of people
younger than me... and im almost 30..... have it. My mom has rheumotoid
arthritis very bad and is on disabiity. If anyone has any ideas on what kind
of doctor to try or something that may help with the pain please let me know.

Welcome to ASA.... You and your mom need to be under the care of a
Rheumatologist to get the best answers and get started on making tomorrow a
better day.

Chelle:  Get to a Rheumatologist soon because the stiffness in a couple
of fingers is what happened at the beginning of my journey to get
diagnosed with RA.  Why a doctor would say you are "too young" for
arthritis is beyond me.  Children get arthritis.  It's called Juvenile
Rheumatoid Arthritis or JRA.  You need to find out if it truly is
arthritis before it goes too far.  Many doctors believe that a history
of RA in the family should not be ignored with diagnoising a patient.

I have been to a Rheumatologist and he said that he doesnt know what it wrong
with me even though the blood test results had elevated levels for the
Rheumatoid factor and also the test for lupus was a little elevated. He knows
that my mom is almost crippled from it cause she is also his patient but he
doesnt seem to be able to help me..... maybe i need to find another doctor
that will listen to me....

Dear Chelle,

It sounds like you need to see a different Rheumy!  And sooner rather
than later.  I also have severe RA in my hands but I still play the
piano!

definitely time to find a different RD.  For decades my dad went to a
"world-renowned" RD and he trusted the man with hiss life (too much so, in my
opinion, but that's another story!).  I went to this RD briefly, when I first
moved back to FL from NC.  He didn't seem to hear anything I said - as long
as my sedrate was in the normal range, everything was ok, according to him.
He also got mad at me for having carpal tunnel releases done after 2 years of
torture!  I fired that RD and changed when I met and liked the PA who worked
for the next RD.  It was a smart move - he helped me more on the very first
visit than the other guy had in 2 years!
