OTP - Stop Drive Through Mastectomies

When I got this, I thought it had to be a hoax, but I checked Snopes.com
and it is TRUE.

Click on the link below to sign the petition.

Mastectomy Hospital Bill in Congress

If you know anyone who has had a mastectomy, you may know that there is
a lot of discomfort and pain afterwards.  Insurance companies are trying
to make mastectomies an outpatient procedure.  Let's give women the
chance to recover properly in the hospital for 2 days after       surgery.

      Mastectomy Bill in Congress

It takes 2 seconds to do this and is very important...please take the
time and do it really quick!

Breast Cancer Hospitalization Bill - Important legislation for all women.

Please send this to everyone in your address book. If there was ever a
time when our voices and choices should be heard, this is one of those
times.  If you're receiving this, it's because I think you will take the
30 seconds to go to vote on this issue and send it on to others you know
who will do the same.

There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which
will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital
stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the
"drive-through mastectomy" where women are forced to go home just a few
hours after surgery, against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy
from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.

Lifetime Television has put this bill on their web page with a petition
drive to show your support.  Last year over half the House signed on.

PLEASE!! Sign the petition by clicking on the web site below.  You need
not give more than your name and zip code number.

http://www.lifetimetv.com/health/breast_mastectomy_pledge.html

This takes about 2 seconds.  PLEASE PASS THIS ON to your friends and
family, and on behalf of all women, THANKS

Ya know Carole,,,,, this may be  a good thing to do,,,, but   I have watched
you drop two or three political bombshells in this newsgroup and then back
out and say nothing.   This is just not the place for that kind of
bullshit....  Life as it happens can be more than people can deal with if
arthritis is kicking their a.s,,, changing their life,,, forcing them to
make big choices.
I realize this is an OTP and you have every do post them if you want to.
Cause no harm...

Carole, thank you for posting this.
Harv, with all due respect to you, this is not political nor is it
bullshit and I'm sure after you give it some thought you will agree.
I'm certain you didn't mean to hurt Carole's feeling nor to alienate we
women who either have faced breast cancer or may in the future.

Hi Ann,    It is worth doing and it is something like this that people need
to pay attention to.  It is very political and our represenitives need to
here from us.
It is still right out of the playbook from which Carole has post before
and the point needed to be made IMO.   This kind of stuff just gets worse
and goes on and on.   May the Lord help us when all this gets around to
hillery care.   So it goes.

Harv, good grief. PLAYBOOK??? give me a break.
BUT, While we are making points lets have a look at your new edition of
the  "Pat Robertson Playbook" (white male bigot edition).
There was absolutely no reason for you to attack Carole for bringing an
important health issue to the groups attention. The point needs to be
made...IMO. This kind of stuff will just get worse and worse as we get
to the chapters on creating political havoc where none currently exist.
So it went.

Thank you Johnie. I posted it as I realize that although this is an
arthritis support group, this is a health issue that we all need to be
concerned with. If they start doing this with one surgical procedure,
what would stop them from doing it to someone who has a joint
replacement?  I guess according to Harv, we are not allowed to talk
about anything but arthritis, so if you are suffering from arthritis and
another illness, you can't speak of that here.

Carole

Harv, you must have a much better memory than I do.  I don't remember Carole
ever posting anything similar that would have gotten you all stirred up.
Are you sure you have the right person in mind?

This is NOT political, it is medical. And men get breast cancer too, so
maybe you should think before you spout venom.  It was listed as OTP, so
if you don't want to read it, don't.

Well, just think before you post. I'm sure you've alienated a lot of
people on here with your post. Breast cancer affects MEN and WOMEN. I
don't know what women you hang around with who think it only affects
women, because every woman I know is much more knowledgable.

Hi Carole,   I am not worried about your opinion of what I post.   I do not
hang around with women other than my wife,,, thank you very much,,, I do
have contact a great number in the places I go and the people I see.
Did you think when you post about the general taking over the CIA??
Did you think before you post something about Bush being subject to
impeachment?
Was it pure political B^%$# that really needed to be post in this
newsgroup about the support for Arthritis????   Please inform me as to the
Cancer newsgroups you post your plea for people to contact their congressmen
about drive by Mastectomies...... and I will go there to read what was said.

Hi Carole,     I have checked google and yahoo and it was someone else.   I
can only say that I am sorry for saying the things I have to you and not the
other person.    It is a stupid old mans mistake.   Please find it in your
heart to forgive me.

Harv

Ps   OTP is exactly for what you used it for and was well done.

Carole, I'm glad to sign it. My first cousin had a double mastectomy last
year and really had a lot of pain afterward.  She definitely needed more
than outpatient care.

Harv,

Maybe you did not consider the fact that men also suffer from breast
cancer.  My SIL, in his mid fifties, had breast cancer and is now among
the five year survivors.  It has taken a psychological toll on him as
well as a physical one.  He has less energy than the average male his
age, is forgetful and lost his nipple which has affected him just as
losing a breast does to many women.

Give these people a break Harv.

Those few extra days in the hospital can mean a lot to some people,
particularly if you have lost a part of your anatomy.  I have had many
out patient surgery procedures and gone home the same day, however I was
thankful for the few extra days in the hospital when I had some of my
surgeries.

Hi Don,    I worked with a guy at Budweiser Brewery that had the same thing
and the results were the same for him.   It the women that think it only
applies to them.   Its about giving the newsgroup a break from the political
world.   I am no big defender of insurance companies where it is all about
money not people and problems.

Wasn't it just this past year that Walt Hanks had breast cancer?  He could
tell you about it.

Thanks, Gwen. No one should be sent home from a surgical procedure
before they are ready. And it shouldn't be insurance companies who
decide when you are ready. That's the doctor's job.

Carole,

I've already signed this before as I received it from someone.  It is
something that needs to be done.  I consider this medical and not
political.  It would be no different if we were in hospital for
arthritis and they made us leave before we were ready.

how they try to slip this stuff by us.

I have read everyones reply to this and am somewhat upset and sad as I have
had breast cancer and to my dying day I will put up things to help anyone
who has to go through it to help them no matter what group.  Thank God, I
was able to stay 3 or 4 days as I needed the help I couldn't get at home.
Mostly the pain and the medication I could get in the hospital but not at
home.  There should never be a "drive through" mastectomy and I will be
signing this petition as I have signed others.  This is a serious health
issue that needs to be addressed and what better way to put it to a group to
get more signatures.  Thank you Carole  I know I am new here to be voicing
an opinion here, but this is an issue very dear to me.  Everyone needs to
care as this is not only a womans issue, men get it too.  Please everyone,
just sign it.  You could be next.  I appologize if this hurts anyone, but
unless you have been there you don't know how important this is to get the
care you need.

I'm so sorry you had to go through all of that. I have a friend who just
had fibroids removed and they sent her home from the hospital much too
soon with only tylenol with codeine. She lives alone and it's very
difficult for her. I wish I lived closer as I'd be over there to help
but she is 3,000 miles away. I also live alone and often think that if
something happened to me, I don't know what I'd do. When you need care,
you need care and that is what insurance is supposed to be for.

When I was sent home I was sent with the codeine too, but when it happens
you need potent drugs to stop the pain.  They had me on morphine and I was
still in tremendous pain and I can take pain to a certain degree.
