Carole - 04 Jun 2006 15:16 GMT I'll be moving soon to my new apartment. I was thinking of getting someone in to clean once a month, but from the places I contacted thus far, it's too expensive. My biggest problem is vacuuming as pushing the vacuum leaves me VERY out of breath. I have heard various reports about Roombas. Some love them, some hate them. I know I've read on here that some of you have them, so I'd like to know what you think. Also, if you love yours, which model do you have as there appear to be quite a few different ones, and I'm wondering if those who love them have a certain model over those who don't like them.
Thanks, Carole
ladylove77 - 04 Jun 2006 17:53 GMT Carole, I have the Pro Elite, and if I didn't have it my floors would never get vacuumed. It kills my back to use a regular vacuum, even the one you don't have to push & pull (can't think what you call it). The Roomba doesn't do quite as good a job as the regular "good" ones, but it is good enough for me. You can see the difference when you use it and when you empty the junk out afterwards, and empty it fairly often while you're vacuuming if you don't use it more often than I do! I love mine. Gwen

One of my biggest problems is under my bed as I can't crouch down to get under it. I have an Oreck (the big one and the little one they give you). I'm OK with the little one, but I can't push the big one, so I'm thinking of selling it and putting the money towards the Roomba. I would keep the little Oreck as I can manage that one. Since I live alone, I don't really make a big mess, and I wear slippers in my apartment so there isn't all that much dirt. So I'm thinking the Roomba may just fit the bill.

I have the original Roomba which I bought a few years ago. I love it. I bought an extra battery on Ebay as well as a quick-charger and I use it all the time. It's not as good as a normal vac but it does a heck of a job, including picking up small chunks of dog food. I've used mine so much that I wore out the treads on the wheels but Roomba will send you replacements free of charge. I was reading in Consumer Reports that the Roombas didn't get high ratings but I couldn't be happier with mine and when it finally dies, I'll definitely get another one.

I think an extra battery and quick charger would be a great idea. And it's good to know that replacement parts can be obtained from the company! Sounds like I'm going to be doing some shopping once I get moved :)

(I'm assuming you deal with that if you deal with dog food!) This medium hair cat who adopted us has been forcing me to vacuum more often, which leaves me with less pain tolerance/energy for other things. If Roomba actually could handle the cat hair, I might buy one for the frequent stuff and then do a really good vacuuming from time to time myself.
(We're selling our house that has been a rental for the past 6 years and I'm ready to use a bit of the money to make getting by a tad easier on me!

One of my dogs chewed up one of her squeaky toys and it picked up the pieces with no problem. I love that it goes under the bed and that I can turn it on, put my feet up and read the newspaper while it's running. I don't care what anyone says (Consumer Reports), the Roomba rules! You have to know, though, that it won't work on a high, thick or plush carpet. I have Berber and it does a great job.

I've sold a bunch of stuff on eBay that I no longer wanted, so I'm thinking that money will go towards the Roomba :)

Sus - 05 Jun 2006 18:50 GMT I bought a Roomba and love it. My dog always thinks it is following her! The only problem I have with it is that it keeps getting lost. It gets stuck under furniture and it is hard to get down on all fours to look for it here and there. I wish it had a way to locate it much like my cordless phone has. It sucks up pet hair really well but you will have to clear the roller brushes after use.

ladylove77 - 05 Jun 2006 19:14 GMT I have a Select Comfort king size air mattress and the motors are under the head of the bed. My Roomba got stuck on one of the motors one time (after my hip replacement) and I had a heck of a time getting under the bed to get it back out. Now I don't let it go under the top of the bed! Gwen

Be sure to get one of the models that has a remote control. It made keeping it from getting stuck a little easier.
The Merry Maids do the vacumming now, so I have not replaced Roomba. It picked up every thing I needed it to, even feathers from my pet birds.

[quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > > Shannon I was going to get Merry Maids but they were too expensive. So that's why I am considering the Roomba. A remote control sounds like a good idea as I can't get on my knees to go looking for it under the bed. My knees would never tolerate that :(

ladylove77 - 06 Jun 2006 04:31 GMT Carol, two Virtual Walls came with mine, but at times I wish I had another one. I have three doors out of one room and I would like to stop the Roomba from going out either one. I have a remote, but it hasn't worked too well for me. After we were talking about the Roomba on here, I got mine out today and it stopped just after it started. I emptied the dust out but decided to look in the manual, and found that there were a couple of other places that also needed cleaning. I ended up taking the rollers out and cleaning them and the ends real good. I was surprised at all the stuff caught around the ends. It should work better now. Gwen

I can't get down on my hands and knees to get under my bed frame. I don't have the door problem in my apartment as each room only has one :) I started looking at the Roombas in Linens and Things today, but I'll have to see what the prices are in other places. The one they had was almost $300, but you did get a $50 gift card :-)))

Ours periodically has reconditioned Roombas for sale at good prices. Or I should say the ad says they do - I've never actually seen them as our store is a ways down on the stocking list.
And of course there's one of my favorite sites - pricegrabber.com - great for finding who has a deal on a pricy item. NAYY

And there is one very close to my new apartment :) I love that store. I got a terrific 4ft X 6ft area rug there for $20. I'll check it out :)

I would have gone ahead and bought one if I were certain we'd have the $$ from the sale of our house before the charge card comes due. Right now, I'm hoping they are still there when the house sells. Maybe I can hide one on the shelf.....

I got a couple of Virtual Walls on Ebay. Another option is to drag a chair into the door opening. Before I got my Virtual Walls I would drag the dog's toy basket and a magazine holder over to block the opening.

It never ceases to amaze me how much stuff these things pick up.

If you are comparing it to a perfectly vacuumed carpet, that's one thing. If you are compraing it to a couple of weeks of knowing you really need to take a chunk out of your abilities for a day or two to do something about that dirty floor, that's something very different! I'm always surprised at the change in colors in our Persian rug (family hierloom!) when I finally get the cat hair vacuumed out of it! LOL
