Well I made it to Palm Springs and had a lovely time there, around 103-105
each day and I love the heat.
I had to take a 3 day short course of prednisone before I left for my
allergies, boy I love that stuff it made my hips and feet and everything
feel great, lasted for almost the whole trip.
When I got home there was a message from my pharmacy that said my insurance
is not covering the enbrel. I have taken it for over 8 months, they said
they couldn't find a pre authorization form,  I told them that was because
they told the nurse that called that she didn't need one, well now they say
they do, the doctors office has a girl that feels those out but she is gone
till next Friday and then the insurance said they couldn't give me a date as
to when it would actually be able to give me the okay after they receive it,
I was shocked I have been feeling it every month at the same place for over
8 months, who knows always something.
Does anyone here take prednisone on a daily basis? I think that is the only
thing that has helped my shoulder, feet and hips more than nay medicine I
have taken so far.
Thanks
Becky

Don't you just love insurance?!  Hope they get it straightened out soon.
Long term Prednisone use is not a good thing.  At times, it is necessary but
the benefits really have to outweigh the risks.
Just a few long term side effects from Prednisone are diabetes, thinning
skin, cataracts, glaucoma, osteoporosis, mood changes, avascular necrosis,
and lots, lots more.  Plus a list of minor problems such as weight gain,
moon face, etc.

I wanted to mention that I refused to use Pred as a pain control measure.
Yes there are times when I need it (I have systemic lupus) but most of the
time, I need pain meds not Prednisone.  I was able to find doctors who
agreed with me (not my rheumy of course who only advocated Prednisone and
Decadron/Depo-Medrol)

Me I take pred. Got it down to 7mg but my body is fighting the drop from
8mg and that was over a 2 month slow taper for just that one mg. I think
I have been on this stuff daily for 5+ years maybe more. Fuzzy brain is
not bringing up that original date. It was when my eye issues first
started and that has been another lifetime. Who was it, Harv, who used
to have a one day on one day off regime with the stuff.
And of course, Char is now on 30 and likely to remain there. Beats lying
in bed in agony not able to walk.

I've been on 3 mg a day for several years now. My RD said the long term
effects were usually associated with much, much higher doses and that I
could conceivably be on 3 mg for life....especially since it really does
make a difference in my quality of life.

Si, senorita. For 15 years it has varied from 5mg. to 15mg. daily. Now
on 10 trying to get back to 7.5 where i will stay till they can restore
my adrenal function. I did fine for 10 years but now have all the side
effects except diabetes and cataracts. It does eventually do some nasty
things to your body but for 15 years it has been the only thing that
keeps me walking.. We have discussed the use of pred many, many times
here and the bottom line continues to be if thats all that works most
of us opt to keep walking. The side effects can be reduced sometimes by
aggresively counter attacking each one before it gets bad. For example
calcium and a good calcium enhancer should be taken before anything
shows up on a scan. Preventive measures will help and it is well worth
any effort. The use of pred has its own list of diseases like Cushings
syndrome and they are all quite serious. I do better when I religously
follow a protocol of body toning herbs and supplements.

Sorry you have to depend on the pred but I always consider the
alternative of life without it and it doesn't bother me so much.

Thank you to all of you. I am going to discuss the prednisone with my family
doc, my RA doc is gone again, he seems to vacation more than he sees
patients, I am really thinking about getting yet another opinion, but will
see what the family doc has to say, I don't want to have to be on it if I
don't need it, but those three days of prednisone at 40mg made me feel great
for over 2 weeks, so will see, don't need anything that will put more weight
on but if a little amount would make it so I could get back to exercise it
might be worth it.
Thanks and I am back on the enbrel 50 once a week and 20 mtx so will go from
there,
Thanks again
